0

The 47-year-old suspect of a triple homicide that took place yesterday in Washington County was found dead in Monroe County this morning by police.

Police had been searching much of the evening for Richard Lee Burton Jr. who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

This morning shortly after 8:00 am, the Monroe County, IN Sheriff’s Department received a tip that Burton’s vehicle was parked at the Blackwell Horse Camp in Monroe County near State Road #446.

When deputies approached the vehicle they found a body believed to be that of Richard Lee Burton, Jr. deceased in his vehicle.

The official confirmation of identification on Richard Lee Burton, Jr will be made by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.

This investigation is continuing but, information discovered from last night’s investigation by Indiana State Police Detectives lead investigators to believe Richard Lee Burton, Jr. was responsible for the deaths of all three victims located inside of the residence at 5882 South Beck’s Mill Road in rural Washington County.

If information is discovered that changes this belief, Indiana State Police Detectives will obviously follow those leads.

The cause of death to Richard Lee Burton, Jr will be released by the Monroe County Coroner.

The information on the identities and causes of death to the three bodies located on Beck’s Mill Road will not be released until the autopsies are completed in Salem tomorrow morning.

A news briefing will be held by at the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg at 12:30 pm on today’s date.

The briefing will take place inside of the post in the training room.

No interviews will be conducted or further information will be released until this briefing.

State police detectives are still at the home located just southwest of Becks Mill .

ESTATE OF BILL MONROE OFFERS RARE OWNERSHIP OF PRIZED POSSESSIONS

0
Bill Monroe’s Name & Likeness, Uncle Pen’s Cabin, and more being offered

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fans of the “Father of Bluegrass Music” have a unique opportunity to own the rights to the name and likeness to Bill Monroe. Regarded as the man who started the format, Monroe joined the WSM Grand Ole Opry in 1939, and was a member for almost six decades – until his passing in September 1996.

One of the few members of both the Country Music Hall of Fame and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Monroe’s musical legacy included legendary stints on Columbia Records and MCA / Decca, with whom he was associated for forty years.

Monroe cast a shadow over music by influencing a wide variety of musical artists.

“I’d still rather listen to Bill and Charlie Monroe than any current record. That’s what America is all about, to me.” / Bob Dylan

“In all of history, he’s the biggest single influence in Country Music. And, he didn’t just influence Country Music, he influenced music in general.” / Ricky Skaggs

Offering the name, image, and likeness of such an American icon is something that is both an honor and a privilege. “While at Buddy Lee Attractions, I was the agent for Bill Monroe for over ten years. I thought of Mr. Monroe as a national treasure. He was like a grandfather to me. We were good friends,” says Tony Conway. The ownership also includes rights to the name “Blue Grass Boys,” which was the name of Bill’s band – a who’s who of greats that over the years has included Flatt & Scruggs, Gordon Terry, Mac Wiseman, Del McCoury, and Stringbean (David Akeman).

In addition to the name and likeness offering – also available are the rights to the BillMonroe.com website, fans can also own several exciting parts of the Bill Monroe legacy – beginning with the historic Uncle Pen’s Cabin in his hometown of Rosine, Kentucky. A home that has special significance in the history of Bluegrass Music, it’s where young Bill went to live with his Uncle after the passing of both parents in 1927. As the only child among his siblings who went to live with Pendleton Vandiver, Monroe received an education about the music of the area from his Uncle through the historic fiddle tunes he would learn – a musical legend that he would eventually take to stages around the world. Bill left the home in 1929, but the music he was exposed to would take hold. Monroe crafted the iconic “Uncle Pen” as a tribute. Over the years, the song was covered by artists such as Hank Williams, Jr., Buck Owens, and Ricky Skaggs – who made it the first Bluegrass song to top the charts in over two decades in 1984. The song received a BMI Award for over one million plays. The home has been in the Monroe family since Bill’s son James bought it in 1973, building the cabin with the original logs. Over the years, many of Bill’s contemporaries have visited the site, including Don Reno, Jimmy Martin, and Lester Flatt, and thousands of Bill’s fans from around the world.

Also being offered in one separate bundle is Bill Monroe memorabilia and personal items, the likes of which has never been available – and will never be available to the public again. Included among the items are over 1,800 personal and business checks – including some written to Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, and Johnny Paycheck; two knives and three wrist watches owned by Monroe, his back brace, social security card, ATM Card and Gas Cards, Christmas Cards, thousands of his personal papers and collectibles, suits, coats, shoes, ties, and even his Last Will and Testament. The collection also includes his own personal record collection, and one of his fiddles – which he kept for sixty-seven years (and has his initials inscribed inside of it!) and an extensive merchandise collection that includes T-Shirts and CD’s of Bill’s, son James’s, caps, 8 by 10 pictures, commemorative plates – and even his own mailing list, with over 10,000 addresses!

But, there’s even more. There are well over 250 live recordings from Bill’s Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival that will be offered in one exclusive package. Monroe started the festival in 1967, and it thrives to this day – fifty years after its’ inception. Over the years, performers who have played Bean Blossom include Blue Highway, Chris Hillman, J.D. Crowe & The New South, John Hartford, Patty Loveless, and Rhonda Vincent.

And, then….there’s parts of the famous Gibson 1923 Lloyd Loar that is on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame. An extra set of tuning keys and a bridge that was replaced. These items from the most famous mandolin in the world are priceless!

It goes without saying that this is going to be a private opportunity of historic proportions, and there will be interest from buyers around the world.

Interested parties should contact Tony Conway, Conway Entertainment Group, the exclusive agent for the Bill Monroe Estate, at 615-724-1818 for more information.

Woman and Young Child Ejected in Single Car Crash on I-65

0

A single vehicle crash this Sunday afternoon, resulted in a woman and three year-old child being ejected from the car.

Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Aaron Trammel revealed, at approximately 12:50 p.m., a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by Eric W. Williams, 31 of Kokomo, was south bound on I-65 at the 217 mile marker (this is two miles north of the Rensselaer exit) when his rear tire blew.

This caused the SUV to lose control.

It went off the roadway to the left, went through the median hit the guard rail that separates north from south bound traffic, went airborne and rolled.

At one point, one of the back seat passengers, Keyida L. Moore, 37 of Kokomo, and Kayla Williams, 3 years old of Kokomo, sitting on Moore’s lap, neither restrained were ejected out the passenger side window.

The SUV rolled onto its wheels up against the cable barriers in the median while Moore landed approximately 10 feet north of the SUV.  Kayla Williams landed in the median approximately 30 feet from the SUV.

Eric Williams, his front seat passenger Latisha Yancy, 31 of Kokomo, back seat passengers Niyel Williams, 4 of Kokomo, Kayden Yancy, 3 of Kokomo, and Jayden Smith, 2 of Kokomo were taken to Saint Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette with non-life threatening injuries.

None of the children were in child restraint seats.  It is believed they were seat belted with two of the younger ones sharing one seat belt.

Moore and Kayla were also taken to Saint Elizabeth East Hospital where Kayla was later airlifted to anIndianapolis hospital with serious/critical injuries.  Moore also received serious injuries.

Indiana law requires all passengers in a moving vehicle be restrained in a seatbelt or child restraint system while the vehicle is in forward motion

Please buckle-up every time, for every trip, long or short.

“Seat belt usage is one of the simplest ways to enhance your safety and reduce injuries in the event of a crash” said Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter. “Trooper’s will aggressively enforce seatbelt usage to advance voluntary compliance and ensure the safety of Hoosier families.”

Police Seeking Killer in Beck’s Mill Triple Homicide, Suspect At-Large

0

Indiana State Police are seeking the Public’s Assistance in finding a 47-year old male believed to have been involved in a triple homicide on Sunday afternoon near Beck’s Mill, 14 miles West of Salem.

According to ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin, Richard Lee Burton Jr. is considered armed and dangerous and believed to be trying to reach Tennessee, Missouri or Texas.

Police have had the Beck’s Mill Road area closed much of Sunday evening and an area around the home taped off.

Around 4:30 pm Sunday, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department did a welfare check at a residence located at 5882 South Beck’s Mill Road, in rural Washington County.

The welfare check was the result of a phone call with the caller being worried about the well-being of the occupants of the residence.

When a deputy arrived at the residence and upon knocking on the door he noticed a deceased person inside of the residence.

Other police officers arrived at the scene and a search of the residence was completed with officers locating two other bodies inside of the home.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of Indiana State Police Detectives and Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigators who have assumed the investigation.

At this time, officers are looking for a person of interest in this investigation.

Officers are looking for Richard Lee Burton, Junior, a 47 year old white male.

He has long brown hair, sometimes worn in a ponytail, 5’-09” tall with blue eyes.

Richard Lee Burton was residing at the residence where the crime took place.

Information received during the initial investigation reveals Burton could be involved in the deaths or could know something about the deaths of the three deceased victims inside of the home.

He should also be considered armed and dangerous.

Initial information also leads officers to believe Burton could be enroute to the states of Tennessee, Missouri or Texas.

He is believed to be driving a blue 1997 Dodge Ram 4×4 2500 extended cab pickup truck.

The truck could possibly have a black or dark blue camper shell.

The vehicle should be bearing Indiana license plate, TK641MUK.

If anyone knows the location of Burton or sees him or his vehicle, they should contact 911 immediately.

The identities of the victims and their causes of death will not be released until autopsies are performed in Salem, Indiana.

These autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday morning.

This investigation is continuing with no further information available for release at this time.

Houchin and Gov. Holcomb Sign Three Crime Bills

0
Gov. Eric Holcomb (seated center) ceremonially signs Senate Enrolled Act 322, authored by State Sen. Erin Houchin (R-Salem, seated left), into law at the Statehouse Thursday, June 1.

Indiana Senator Erin Houchin was instrumental in passing three crime bills that will help take dangerous criminals off the streets and also help solve crimes, exonerate the innocent and bring peace to victims and their families.

Houchin was instrumental in the following three bills – HEA 1406, SEA 322 and SEA 323:

HEA 1406:

  • HEA 1406 is aimed at keeping the repeat drug dealers who fuel the heroin epidemic off the streets through tougher prison sentences.
  • Prohibits a court from suspending any part of a sentence below the minimum sentence if a person is convicted of heroin dealing as a Level 2 or Level 3 felony, and the person has any prior felony conviction.

o   Under previous law, this provision only applied to heroin dealing as a Level 2 felony, and only if the person had a previous felony conviction for dealing a drug other than marijuana or a synthetic drug.

  • Provides that the amount of heroin sold over a period of no more than 90 days can be aggregated for purposes of criminal charges, with penalty levels as follows:
Existing penalties for heroin sold in one instance New penalties for heroin sold over a 90-day span
Level 4 felony At least 1 but less than 5 grams / less than 1 gram with enhancing circumstance At least 3 but less than 7 grams
Level 3 felony At least 5 but less than 10 grams / at least 1 but less than 5 grams with enhancing circumstance At least 7 but less than 12 grams / at least 3 but less than 7 grams with enhancing circumstance
Level 2 felony At least 10 grams / at least 5 but less than 10 grams with enhancing circumstance At least 12 grams / at least 7 but less than 12 grams with enhancing circumstance

SEA 322:

  • Law enforcement agencies already collect identifying information of arrestees as a part of their standard booking procedures. Collecting a DNA swab is a more modern option that law enforcement will be able to use when investigating and enforcing Indiana’s laws. This will lead to solving more crimes, exonerating the innocent and bring peace to victims and their families.
  • Requires individuals arrested for felonies to submit a DNA sample obtained from a cheek swab beginning in 2018.
  • Requires the officer obtaining the swab to:

o   Inform the arrestee of his/her right to have the DNA sample removed from the state DNA database under the circumstances described below; and

o   Provide instructions and a form that may be used to request removal

  • Provides that samples may not be shipped for identification in the DNA database unless a court has found probable cause for the felony arrest, or the arrest was pursuant to a felony warrant.
  • Provides for the removal of DNA samples from the database if the arrestee is acquitted of all felony charges, the felony charges are dismissed or converted to misdemeanors, or the arrestee is not charged with any felonies within 365 days.
  • Allows a court to increase or revoke a defendant’s bail based on DNA evidence tending to show that the defendant committed additional crimes that were not considered at the time bail was initially set.

SEA 323:

  • Allows victims of domestic violence to petition the court to divide a wireless service contract that is shared with their abuser to ensure victims of domestic violence are able to keep their contact network and not have their communications monitored by their abuser
  • Allows a court to place a protective order on household pets in domestic violence situations

HEA 1406 addresses a variety of criminal offenses including a provision authored by Houchin  that enhances criminal penalties for dealing heroin.

Wolthausen, who spent the 2012 season as the defensive line coach at Purdue, rejoins the Boilermakers after spending the previous three seasons (2014-16) at Connecticut. He served as the Huskies’ special teams coordinator and linebackers coach in 2016 following two seasons as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.

At UConn, Wolthausen mentored Julian Campenni to second team All-American Conference honors and Folorunso Fatukasi to honorable mention recognition in 2015. The Huskies appeared in the St. Petersburg Bowl that same season.

Prior to UConn, Wolthausen spent one season (2013) as the special teams coordinator at Florida International.

In his first stint at Purdue, Wolthausen helped guide the Boilermakers to the 2013 Heart of Dallas Bowl. Under Wolthausen’s guide, Kawann Short finished his senior season with 15.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks en route to earning second team All-America honors from the AP. Short was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

His initial year at Purdue came after Wolthausen joined the Boilermakers from the Las Vegas Locomotives in the United Football League, where he served as the defensive line coach. The Locomotives won UFL titles in 2009 and 2010 and lost in the championship game in 2011.

Prior to spending the 2007 season with the Atlanta Falcons, he spent four seasons at Louisville. Starting with the Cardinals as the linebacker coach, he moved on to defensive line and eventually became co-defensive coordinator in 2006.

In 2005, Wolthausen mentored defensive end Elvis Dumervil to consensus All-America honors. Dumervil, who broke the NCAA record with six sacks against Kentucky, was named the 2005 Big East Player of the Year, while also winning the Bronko Nagurski and Ted Hendricks awards. Dumervil was selected in the fourth round by the Denver Broncos in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Wolthausen began his coaching career in 1980 as student assistant at Cal State Northridge before returning to his alma mater, Humboldt State, as a part-time defensive assistant from 1980 to 1982.

He joined the University of Arizona as a graduate assistant for a pair of seasons (1983-84) before becoming full-time with the Wildcats as the outside linebackers coach in 1985 and defensive line coach in 1986.

In 1987, Wolthausen followed head coach Larry Smith from Tucson to the University of Southern California, where he helped guide the Trojans to three Rose Bowl appearances in six seasons (1987-92).

After spending two winning seasons as the defensive line coach at Oklahoma in 1993 and 1994, Wolthausen moved on to Arizona State, where he worked with same defensive unit. With Wolthausen on staff, the 1996 Sun Devils came up just shy of winning at least a share of the school’s first national title after falling to Ohio State 20-17 in the final seconds of the 1997 Rose Bowl. ASU finished the year ranked fourth nationally with an 11-1 record.

Wolthausen, born Dec. 27, 1957, played linebacker at Humboldt, earning all-league honors in 1979, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1981. He and his wife, Michel, have a son, Noah, and a daughter, Quinn.
