Shooting Victims Identified; Police Still Look For Shooters

0

Two men who were shot on Salem’s Bypass last night have now been identified by police.

The victim transported to the University of Louisville Hospital by air ambulance last evening after being shot has been identified as Delquan Edward Standard, 19, from Louisville, KY.

The deceased victim has been identified as Marty Jay Patterson, III, 18, from Louisville, KY.

Patterson was taken to St. Vincent Salem Hospital where he died as a result of nine gunshot wounds to his torso and one to the leg.

The autopsy was completed this morning at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville, KY preliminarily revealed Patterson died from multiple gunshot wounds to his body.

According to Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Jerry Goodin, these autopsy results are preliminary pending results from toxicology tests that usually take up to six weeks to complete.

At this time detectives are still looking for possible witnesses who may have been on the Salem Bypass from 9:15 pm to 9:30 pm.

At approximately 9:26 pm Wednesday evening, a 911 call came into the Washington County 911 center of two men injured on the side of the road on the Salem Bypass just west of State Road 60.

Police and Washington County EMS were dispatched to the scene. Officers from the Salem City Police along with deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department responded to the location.

When police arrived they discovered two male subjects on the side of the roadway that had been shot.

There was no vehicle at the scene.

According to SPD Officer Russell Wilcoxson, one of the victims had been shot nine times in the torso and the leg. The other man had been shot in the back of the head.

“They stated they were from Louisville and they were lost and didn’t know where they were at,” said Wilcoxson. “They wouldn’t tell us names or a description of the vehicle they were in.”

It is not known if both men were shot with the same gun or with different caliber handguns.

Wilcoxson did say the other two men in the vehicle were also reportedly from Louisville.

Wilcoxson said “the victims stated that they came up here and the two guys driving the car kicked them out…once they kicked them out, and they were on the side of the road, they started shooting them and then took off.”

Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigators along with Indiana State Police Detectives processed the crime scene and know that at least one shooter left the crime scene.

The western portion of the bypass between State Road 60 and State Road 135 was closed last night to traffic for approx. two hours.

There are no suspects.

If anyone has any information you are encouraged to contact the Indiana State Police Post at 1-800-872-6743 or 812-246-5424. Callers can remain anonymous.

Detectives still believe at least one and maybe more suspects are on the loose.

Purdue’s Kim, Replogle Awarded Big Ten Medal Of Honor

0

The Purdue University Athletic Department announced August Kim of the women’s golf team and Jake Replogle of the football team were awarded the prestigious Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor at the fifth-annual Golden Pete Awards Show at historic Loeb Playhouse on Purdue’s campus in West Lafayette, Ind.

Kim was the 2016 Big Ten champion, setting the 54-hole conference championship record with a nine-under-par 207 and becoming the sixth Boilermaker in program history to take home a conference title. She is a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, including first team honors in 2016, and earned Women’s Golf Coaches Association all-region recognition last season, as well. Kim posted a second straight top-10 finish at the 2017 Big Ten Championships, tying for eighth place and notching the 13th top-10 tournament performance of her career.

As a senior, she led the Boilermakers to a pair of tournament team titles and has played 65 percent of her rounds at par or better. Her 72.24 stroke average this year is the best by a Boilermaker since Maria Hernandez in 2007-08, and currently ranks second in school history. The St. Augustine, Florida, native will be a three-time WGCA All-Scholar team and Academic All-Big Ten honoree. Kim is an Academic All-America nominee in 2017, maintaining a 3.56 grade-point average as a biochemistry major, and she will graduate in May.

Replogle, a defensive tackle from Centerville, Ohio, was a four-year letterwinner for the Boilermakers. Appearing in 39 career games, he amassed 158 total tackles, including 35 for loss and 7.5 sacks. His tackles for loss total ranks tied for 14th in school history. Prior to the 2016 season, Replogle was named to the watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award. Then, despite missing nearly half of the Big Ten Conference schedule with an injury, he was voted honorable mention All-Big Ten by the conference coaches, finished second on the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and eighth with 45 total tackles.

The co-captain was Purdue’s National Football Foundation 2016 National Scholar Athlete nominee, a member of the NFF’s 2017 Hampshire Honor Society (which highlights the sport of football’s unique ability to developtomorrow’s brightest leaders) and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient. Boasting a 3.49 cumulative grade-point average, Replogle will graduate in May with dual degrees in accounting and management.

The Big Ten, the nation’s oldest collegiate conference, commemorates the 103rd anniversary of a very unique tradition – the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The conference’s most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student from the graduating class of each university who had “attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work.” Big Ten schools currently feature more than 9,500 students competing in intercollegiate athletics, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In more than 100 years of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, almost 1,400 students have earned this distinction.

Lt. Gov. and BMV Urge Motorists and Motorcyclists to Rule the Road Together

0

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and Indiana’s Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch and Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ (BMV) Commissioner Peter L. Lacy are reminding all motorists to be extra alert as warmer weather means more motorcycles on our roadways.

“In my role overseeing our Office of Tourism Development, I know that cruising Indiana’s scenic byways is a favorite rite of spring for many motorcycle riders,” said Lt. Governor Crouch. “While motorcyclists have to ride defensively, people behind the wheel in cars and trucks should do their part to help keep riders safe.”

Drivers can improve their ability to avoid a crash with a motorcyclist by giving the rider extra space on the road, by not following too closely and by taking extra care to watch for motorcycles at intersections and in their vehicle’s blind spot.

“Distracted or inattentive driving has become a major problem for those who ride motorcycles,” said BMV Commissioner Peter L. Lacy. “Texting while driving is not only dangerous for drivers and their passengers, it places motorcyclists at even greater risk.”

In 2016, 98 riders were killed in motorcycle crashes in Indiana. Statistics from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute show that in “failure to yield right of way” crashes involving motorcycles, other vehicles were at fault 85 percent of the time.

The BMV recommends that all riders, regardless of experience, wear proper motorcycle safety equipment, including an approved helmet, gloves, long pants and sturdy boots.

All riders are also encouraged to complete a Ride Safe Indiana-approved motorcycle safety course. You can learn more about how to “Rule the Road Together” or sign-up for a rider safety course at RideSafeIndiana.com, the BMV’s motorcycle safety training website.

Chip Seal Projects Scheduled Across Southwest Indiana

Chip seal 1

The Indiana Department of Transportation announces short-term road closures for chip seal operations across southwest Indiana, beginning on or around May 3.

INDOT maintenance staff have identified nine different state highways for preservation through chip sealing. Operations will commence at the beginning of May and last until mid-June, depending upon weather conditions. The dates and locations for chip seal projects are as follows:

  • On or around May 3 – State Road 54 near Bedford from S.R. 45 to S.R. 58 and then from S.R. 58 to S.R. 37
  • On or around May 5 – S.R. 458 near Bedford from S.R. 158 to the end of the highway
  • On or around May 9 – S.R. 56 near Paoli from East County Road 75 North to S.R. 337
  • On or around May 16 – S.R. 62/66 west of Leavenworth from S.R. 237 to the S.R. 66 east junction
  • On or around May 22 – S.R. 62 east of Ferdinand from S.R. 145 to S.R. 37
  • On or around May 26 – S.R. 62 From the Boonville city limits at West Maxville Road to just west of U.S. 231
  • On or around June 6 – S.R. 257 Near Stendal and Velpen from S.R. 56 to the end of the highway.
  • On or around June 14 – S.R. 356 from the Petersburg city limit to S.R. 257

Chip sealing extends pavement life by keeping good roads in good condition. As the name implies, the treatment seals small cracks in the pavement prevents potholes from forming. In addition, the stone chips improve friction for stopping and skid resistance in rain, ice and snow. Chip-seal is one of INDOT‘s most effective pavement preservation methods. Studies show that every $1 invested in chip seal operations saves $6 to $14 in future roadway costs.

These chip seal projects require full road closures, though local traffic will have access to the point of closure. This is due to loose stone and dust that could potentially create a traffic hazard. Full closures also improve the quality of the finished surface and productivity during operations, reducing costs. Depending upon length, most chip seal projects can be completed within a week. On average, chip seal operations add three to five years of life to pavement.

In 2014, INDOT partnered with Purdue University research the state’s chip-seal program. From 2014 to 2016, labor and equipment costs were reduced from $2,039 to $1,544 per lane mile, or about $500. This year, INDOT will complete 162 lane miles in southwest Indiana in just under six weeks.

INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews.
