Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Dave O’Mara Contractors closed State Road 3 between U.S. 50 and Westport in early May to complete an asphalt resurface project in Decatur and Jennings Counties.

Beginning on or after Monday, August 5, crews plan to begin final paving operations on S.R. 3 between the U.S. 50 bypass and Westport. During this time, access will be maintained for local traffic only. Thru traffic will not be permitted while work is in progress. Throughout the closure, motorists should use the official detour route which follows U.S. 50 to U.S. 421 to S.R. 46. Paving operations are expected to take place through the end of August and final work is expected to be complete by late October, weather permitting

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Midwestern Electric plans to begin work at the intersection of State Road 46 and Brown County State Park Road on or after Monday, August 5, to install a new traffic signal in Brown County.

Work will take place on S.R. 46 at the Brown County State Park entrance and Old State Road 46 intersection and is expected to be complete by mid-September, weather permitting. Motorists should expect single lane closures while work is in progress. Crews will begin to place signage in the area prior to the start of construction.

The closure will take place just east of Dudleytown between S.R. 11 and South County Road 825 East and is expected to be complete by mid-September, weather permitting. Crews will begin to place signage in the area prior to the start of construction. During the closure, motorists should use the official detour route which follows S.R 11 to U.S. 50 to I-65.

The Floyd County Health Department has been notified by the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) that they have identified one sample of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile Virus (WNV) in Floyd County.

The positive mosquito samples were collected the week of July 17, 2024 by a representative of the Floyd County Health Department during routine county-wide mosquito sampling.

No human cases of West Nile have been identified, according to the Floyd County Health Department.

Although Floyd County has had positive mosquito samples for several years, this is the first positive sample for 2024.

Most people who become infected with WNV can experience mild illness such as fever, headache, and body aches before recovering fully.

However, in some individuals, especially the elderly and immune compromised, WNV can cause serious illness and even death.

Residents of Floyd County should continue to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites by using DEET and other repellants, wearing protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants, and if possible avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Homeowners should also be aware of their property and correct common sources of mosquito breeding sites including clogged gutters, old tires, failing septic systems, abandoned/ nonfunctional swimming pools, and other water containing items, Homeowners should also be diligent about maintaining overgrown grass, shrubs, and trees that can harbor mosquitoes during the day.
