Salem Animal Control Reminder About City Tags

0

Larry Bills, Salem Animal Control Officer wants to remind Salem residents it’s time to renew their City tags are due the first of January.

“You can go to the City Clerk’s office or come to the shelter,” said Bills.

If dogs or cats in the city limits haven’t been neutered or spayed, the tags are $6. If they have been, they are $2.

Bills reminded pet owners that rabies vacinations are due a year from when their shots are were given.

“There is free assistance for households making less than $30,000. There are vouchers for spay and neuter for cats and dogs,” said Bills.

Donations are still welcome at the shelter. Bills said they are always in need of Pine sol, paper towels, Clorox wipes and bleach cleaners.

“We can use volunteers,” said Bills. “But we would like them in the mornings about 9a.”

The shelter hours are Monday – Friday, 12:30p to 4:30 and Saturdays from 10a – 2p.

Indiana students to get free FAFSA filing help at College Goal Sunday

0

Financial aid professionals will be volunteering at 40 sites in Indiana to help college-bound students and their families open the door to financial aid during College Goal Sunday. The event is set for 2 p.m. (local time), February 12, 2017.

The free program assists Indiana students in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide.

The FAFSA MUST be filed by March 10 to be eligible for Indiana financial aid. College Goal Sunday is so important since completing this required form correctly and by the deadline is sometimes perceived to be complicated and time consuming. In less than one afternoon at a College Goal Sunday event, students and their families can get free help and file the form online.

Now in its 28th year, College Goal Sunday has helped more than 90,000 Indiana students and families complete the FAFSA properly and on time. College Goal Sunday is a charitable program of the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association (ISFAA).

College Goal Sunday Doubles the Help Offered “The event on February 12 th will be the second College Goal Sunday ISFAA is offering this FAFSA filing season. With the FAFSA opening last October, College Goal Sunday made the decision to add a November event in addition to this traditional February event,” said Bill Wozniak, co-chair of College Goal Sunday. “We hope all Hoosiers who have not filed already, take advantage of College Goal Sunday events across Indiana, file the FAFSA, and get one step closer to fulfilling their educational goals.”

According to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, programs like College Goal Sunday are reaching first-generation college students. In recent years, according to CHE statistics, more single-parent Hoosier families have filed for financial aid, indicating programs like College Goal Sunday are reaching high-risk students and their families.

“Students who don’t complete their financial aid paperwork properly and on time are often very disappointed when they find out how much financial aid they lost,” said Wozniak. “This is why the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association not only continues to provide College Goal Sunday, but added the second event this year. If our assistance gives students a better chance at higher education and less debt, we’re fulfilling our mission.”

What students should bring Students should attend College Goal Sunday with their parent(s) or guardian(s), and parents’ should bring completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 Forms and other 2015 income and benefits information.

Students who worked last year should bring their income information as well. Students 24 years of age or older may attend alone and bring their own completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 Form or other 2015 income and benefits information. Students and parents are encouraged to apply for their U.S.

Department of Education FSA IDs at fsaid.ed.gov before coming to the event.

Volunteers will walk through the online form line-by- line and answer families’ individual questions as needed. All sites offer FAFSA online capabilities and many have Spanish interpreters. A complete list of sites is available at CollegeGoalSunday.org.

Attendees may win educational prizes Students may also win one of ten $1000 scholarships. Students who attend any of the College Goal Sunday sites and submit a completed evaluation form will automatically be entered in a drawing for a $1000 scholarship. The winners will be notified in April, and prizes will be sent directly to the higher education institution selected by the winning students.

21st Century Scholars benefit

21st Century Scholars are income-eligible students who sign a contract in the seventh or eighth grade promising they will graduate from high school, meet grade point requirements, fulfill a pledge of good citizenship, and apply for college financial aid. Upon high school graduation, Scholars who have fulfilled the commitment receive state funds to help cover their college tuition and fees for eight semesters at eligible Indiana colleges. To fulfill their pledge, scholars must submit a completed FAFSA form on time.

College Goal Sunday can help.

Program is a national model College Goal Sunday originated right here in Indiana, and is now a national model. Following Indiana’s example, College Goal Sunday events organized by more than 34 states have opened doors to higher education for hundreds of thousands of students all over the country.

IHS Issues Call for NHDI Volunteer Judges

0

The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) is issuing a call for volunteer judges to take part in the 2017 National History Day in Indiana (NHDI) contests. This year, the need is greater than ever with the addition of a new regional contest at Hanover College (March 18).

Also for the first time, the Indianapolis Public Schools contest (March 15) will be held at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, home of IHS and the Indiana Experience.

In addition, judges are needed at four annual regional contests in Notre Dame, Ind. (Feb. 25), Indianapolis (March 11), Nashville (April 1) and Evansville (April 8), as well as the state competition at Ivy Tech’s campus in downtown Indianapolis (May 6).

This year, more than 5,400 students are expected to participate in NHDI, creating projects in the form of documentaries, exhibits, papers, performances and websites. This year’s theme is Taking a Stand in History.

At the contests, volunteer judges will work in teams to evaluate projects, interview students and rank winners. Regional winners will advance to state, where students can win special prizes for Indiana history topics. The top two entries from each junior and senior category at state are also eligible to compete in The Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest in June at the University of Maryland.

Typically, NHDI judges have a background or interest in education, social studies or media. Teachers who volunteer as judges will be eligible for Professional Growth Points (PGPs) from IHS. Registration is open online at www.indianahistory.org/historyday.

NHDI contests are sponsored by IHS, with support from the Hoover Family Foundation, the Richard W. and Irene Rooker Family Foundation, the TCU Foundation and the Vigran Family Foundation. For more information on NHDI and other IHS programs, call (317) 232-1882.

Gym and Court Named In Honor of Ray Oppel’s 49 Year Tenure With Salem

0

Monday night before the Salem Middle School Boy’s final home game, the crowd was filled with quite a few friends and family of SMS Principal Ray Oppel; most of who knew the secret of what was about to happen.

An area of the floor was covered and although nobody had seen it, the product of a few months of preparation would soon come to pass — that the gym and the court would be named in honor of Ray C. Oppel.

Oppel, who had been kept in the quiet, waited on the side of the gym, watching his family, friends, SMS staff and School Board gather at the center of the basketball court.

After a few remarks by Salem Schools Board President and WSLM Sports Director Mark “Bubba” Abbott, Oppel’s grandson, Brandon Pepmeier took the podium.

“He’s served the community in education for 49 years,” said Brandon. “And been married to my grandmother for 50 years…which is pretty cool.”

Dr. Lynn Reed, Salem Superintendent, presented Oppel with a plaque and a promise. “When you’re ready to retire – in a few years down the road — we’ll put a bronze plaque up in the building. But for now, we honor you with this plaque. For your dedication and untiring commitment to athletics and academics at Salem Middle School.”

The gym was named the Ray C. Oppel Gymansium and the floor of the building’s newest gym was named the Ray C. Oppel Court, complete with his signature.

The plaque summed up everyone’s sentiments — “A champion for Salem Community Schools and a pillar of Cub Pride for over 48 years.”

Pepmeier noted that his grandfather ran track and cross country at Vincennes University in 1964 through 1966. The next two years, Oppel moved to Middle Tennessee State and in 1969 began teaching elementary PE at Salem.

From 1970 to 73, Oppel taught English at Salem High School and in 1975 completed his Masters in Counseling at IU.

In 1984, he became a counselor at SMS and has been the Principal of SMS for the past 23 years, first beginning in 1994.

Oppel has spent many years in coaching and officiating, as well.

In 1969 and 70, he was the 7th grade boys basketball coach. In 1970-71, he was the assistant Varsity Boys Basketball coach when they went to semi-state.

The next four years, he served as the JV Boys Basketball head coach and in 1974, took over as the Varsity Head Coach of the Salem Lions, through 1976.

Oppel also served as the Head Coach for Varsity Cross Country, when he took the team to the state finals in 1973.

In 1984, he served as the boys 8th grade coach and in 2000, helped his daughter, Kandi, coach.

Oppel began officiating in 1976 and has done basketball, volleyball, track and cross country.

In 1993 and 94, he began his first year as a start for the cross country state finals.

The Salem School Board and friends and family of Ray Oppel gathered Monday night before the Salem Cubs basketball game.

Dr. Lynn Reed presented Oppel with a plaque.

Oppel’s four grandchildren pulled the cover off the new logo of RAY C. OPPEL COURT
Before the game, Oppel shook hands with each SMS player – including his grandson, Brody Pepmeier.
