0

Indiana State Police are releasing the name of the deceased involved in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night in Crawford County.

Richard A. Jackson, 45, of Louisville, Kentucky, fled from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department around 8:20 last night along Interstate 64 into Crawford County.

Near the 84 mile marker, Jackson exited his vehicle and confronted Harrison County Deputies, at which point they fatally shot him.

The investigation into Jackson’s death remains active by State Police detectives, and upon completion, will be forwarded to the Crawford County Prosecutor for review.

No further information is being released at this time.

Wear Your FREE T-shirt Sunday vs. Wisconsin

0

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Athletics is asking fans to wear the free t-shirts they will find on their seats at Mackey Arena for Sunday’s Big Ten showdown against Wisconsin, televised nationally on CBS Sports at 4:30 p.m. ET. Purdue is giving out almost 15,000 free t-shirts during Sunday’s game with a gold version or a black version to be placed on each seat.

The annual t-shirt game has received national acclaim from many media outlets as it creates a stunning visual display for a national television audience — showcasing Mackey Arena as the top college basketball venue in America. Sunday’s game will be televised nationally by CBS and is one of just three nationally-televised games in that time slot.

The object of the placement of each shirt is to create a visually-stunning design around Mackey Arena that will be eye-catching during the national CBS broadcast, and to showcase Purdue basketball and Mackey Arena.

Previously, the annual t-shirt game has been held against Ohio State (twice), Boston College and North Carolina State.

About 100 tickets remain for Sunday’s battle with the 13th-ranked Badgers. Call 800.49.SPORT for more information.

Attorney General Zoeller announces Indy World Trade Center bid

0

Upon leaving office, Zoeller will seek to increase Indiana exports, global trade ties

Departing Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced that part of his future plans include partnering with others to bring a World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) licensed organization and facility to Indiana once he leaves public service on January 9th.

“This new mission of developing a World Trade Center in Indianapolis provides an opportunity for me to continue to serve the best interests of Indiana as our state begins its third century,” said Zoeller.  “The WTC-Indy will serve to enhance trade opportunities for manufacturers, increase global investments and help promote all that is best of our Hoosier state.”

Zoeller and former Marion County Clerk Doris Anne Sadler will lead an investment group pursuing a WTCA license for an Indianapolis-based World Trade Center (WTC) organization and eventual facility dedicated to strengthening the state’s ties to the global economy while helping individual firms seeking to export and import products abroad.

Founded in 1969 and headquartered in New York City, the WTCA is a non-profit organization with more than 320 member organizations in 90 countries, creating an “international ecosystem” of reciprocal global connections, commercial properties and integrated trade services under the World Trade Center brand.  The WTCA and its 15,000 professionals worldwide stimulate trade and investment opportunities for commercial property developers, economic development agencies and international businesses looking to connect globally and prosper locally.

Indianapolis is the 4th largest U.S. metropolitan area currently without a WTC designation and Zoeller believes it is time to change that.

“Trade is tremendously important for Indiana’s economy and World Trade Center operations provide local enterprises and businesses with an array of integrated trade and business services,” said Zoeller.  “We are encouraged by the opportunity that this process affords and confident it will be a very big boost for both the city of Indianapolis and our state if we are successful with the bid.  It is something I was working on prior to my public service in the attorney general’s office and I look forward to rallying community support and completing this exciting project.”

Zoeller will serve as chairman of the effort and Sadler will serve as president, leading the application and licensing process after receiving preliminary interest from the WTCA in October 2016.  A formal application to the WTCA will be submitted on January 12 for a final WTCA decision coming as early as February 9, 2017. Upon final WTCA approval, both the non-profit and for-profit arms will begin operations under license.

Former Indiana Office of Management and Budget official Travis Spotts is serving as executive director.  The website for the Indianapolis effort will be www.WTCIndy.com.

A WTCA member is exclusively licensed to develop and operate a WTC in their region. WTC operations provide high-end business facilities and integrated trade services for corporate members, tenants and the local business community in order to promote local economic development and grow international trade and investment.  Services include: trade information and education; trade missions; business-to-business matchmaking on an international scale; legal and business services; dining/membership club services; exhibition services and tenant services.

Zoeller believes Indianapolis is ripe for such an opportunity.  According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, exports from the Indianapolis metro area grew an average of three percent (3%) annually over the last decade while exports from Indiana grew at a slightly higher annual rate of five percent (5%).  The Indianapolis metro area accounts for thirty percent (30%) of all Indiana exports.

“Data from World Trade Centers worldwide demonstrate that having the designation for your community can drive economic growth.  It strengthens connectivity with the world.  It helps smaller businesses identify opportunities overseas and navigate complex international transactions.  It is a premier partner to bring to Indiana,” said Sadler.

AFP-Indiana Slams Lawmakers for Proposing More Tax Increases in 2017 Agenda

0

Today Indiana House leadership announced their 2017 legislative agenda, which contains their plans for infrastructure funding.

Included in the proposal is a bevy of tax increases, including a ten cent increase in gasoline taxes and a $15 per vehicle fee. In addition, the plan also calls for gasoline taxes to be tied to inflation, resulting in a perpetual tax increase for future generations without the accountability of a vote.

The shifting of gasoline sales tax revenue to a designated fund was also proposed, to be fully implemented in 2021.

AFP Indiana state director Justin Stevens had the following comment: “With $2 billion in reserves, another $1 billion in projected revenue increases, and only a small portion of gasoline sales taxes going to roads, it is time for legislators to make priorities.

Before any tax increases are discussed, gasoline sales tax revenue should be moved to a designated fund immediately, and spending should be frozen at current levels using a portion of revenue increases to fill the gap.

Hoosiers overwhelmingly agree that if lawmakers aren’t using existing money to make roads a priority, they should not be trusted with more of our hard-earned paychecks.”

AFP Indiana and its 70,000 activists across the state will strongly oppose an increase in gasoline taxes. In the coming days AFP will lead the charge in educating citizens about this issue through grassroots engagement at doors, on the phone and through mail.

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) exists to recruit, educate, and mobilize citizens in support of the policies and goals of a free society at the local, state, and federal level, helping every American live their dream – especially the least fortunate. AFP has more than 2.8 million activists across the nation, a local infrastructure that includes 35 state chapters, and has received financial support from more than 100,000 Americans in all 50 states. Snow Brings Accidents and Closings

0

The season’s first snow has descended on Kentuckiana, bringing with it plenty of accidents and school closings.

Schools began calling off classes this morning by 5a.

Salem, East Washington and West Washington were all called off today along with most other schools in the WSLM Listening Area — Lawrence, Jackson, Scott, Madison, Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Crawford, Orange.

“The line of snow ended with the northern counties of Lawrence, Washington and Scott,” said Becky White, WSLM General Manager and Owner. “I’ve been monitoring this for a couple of days so we could stay on top of the weather changes. The National Weather Service in Louisville is calling for a worse case scenario of 5 inches. I think we’ll get a couple of more inches.”

The official reading this morning at 6a at WSLM was 2 inches.

According to Washington County Deputy Sheriff Brent Miller they department has been working accidents since early this morning.

“Since 4:45 am we have had 10 total accidents, 5 requiring reports, 2 with slight injuries, county roads are snow covered and slick, please travel with caution. We are currently working several accidents,” he noted in a Facebook message.

Washington County Sheriff Roger Newlon spoke on WSLM this morning. “Take your time. Allow time — Leave early and take your time. The roads are passable but you need to use caution.”

When asked for tips on staying in your vehicle after an accident, Newlon responded: “Hopefully they have a phone to call 911. It takes time to get to you this morning. We have all of our 4x4s out…we are working three accidents at the same time. It may take time, but we’ll get to you.”

Newlon said the county highway has done a great job. “I will give them a pat on the back. They’ve been out since early this morning putting salt and sand on the county roads. I know they haven’t hit them all but they’re still out in full force.”

Newlon said if you are in an accident in the snow, please stay in your vehicle.

“If all possible….stay in the car. Carry a blanket in the vehicle. use your cell phone. If you’re not in the middle of the road, stay inside,” he said.
