The season’s first snow has descended on Kentuckiana, bringing with it plenty of accidents and school closings.
Schools began calling off classes this morning by 5a.

Salem, East Washington and West Washington were all called off today along with most other schools in the WSLM Listening Area — Lawrence, Jackson, Scott, Madison, Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Crawford, Orange.
“The line of snow ended with the northern counties of Lawrence, Washington and Scott,” said Becky White, WSLM General Manager and Owner. “I’ve been monitoring this for a couple of days so we could stay on top of the weather changes. The National Weather Service in Louisville is calling for a worse case scenario of 5 inches. I think we’ll get a couple of more inches.”
The official reading this morning at 6a at WSLM was 2 inches.
According to Washington County Deputy Sheriff Brent Miller they department has been working accidents since early this morning.
“Since 4:45 am we have had 10 total accidents, 5 requiring reports, 2 with slight injuries, county roads are snow covered and slick, please travel with caution. We are currently working several accidents,” he noted in a Facebook message.
Washington County Sheriff Roger Newlon spoke on WSLM this morning. “Take your time. Allow time — Leave early and take your time. The roads are passable but you need to use caution.”
When asked for tips on staying in your vehicle after an accident, Newlon responded: “Hopefully they have a phone to call 911. It takes time to get to you this morning. We have all of our 4x4s out…we are working three accidents at the same time. It may take time, but we’ll get to you.”
Newlon said the county highway has done a great job. “I will give them a pat on the back. They’ve been out since early this morning putting salt and sand on the county roads. I know they haven’t hit them all but they’re still out in full force.”
Newlon said if you are in an accident in the snow, please stay in your vehicle.
“If all possible….stay in the car. Carry a blanket in the vehicle. use your cell phone. If you’re not in the middle of the road, stay inside,” he said.

With winter weather in the forecast, Indiana Department of Transportation Snow Fighters are mobilizing to keep the roads safe.
The National Weather Service is forecasting three to four inches of snowfall with two to three inches of accumulation in southwestern Indiana beginning in the early morning hours on Thursday, January 5.
The system is expected to start in the eastern part of the state, and move west bringing light snowfall early on and later the potential for snow squalls – or areas of blowing snow that can reduce visibility and create hazardous conditions.

Snow Fighters have been monitoring conditions since Tuesday night, with patrols out looking for slick spots as temperatures dropped below freezing.
They are also working today (Wednesday, Jan. 4) to pre-treat roads and bridges with salt brine. When snow begins to fall, our Snow Fighters will mobilize and begin snow removal operations in 12-16 hour shifts until the system has passed and the roads are clear.
Motorists are reminded to prepare for hazardous driving conditions during the event. INDOT offers these tips for the motoring public:
There are a number of reasons for this: the driver may be headed to the starting place for their specific route, they may on their way to refuel, or they could be treating roads with brine or salt.
Also remember, our Snow Fighters have designated routes and it takes two to three hours to complete a cycle. You may also see Yellow Trucks with their blades not engaged.
Motorists should also note that as temperatures drop below 20 degrees, salt alone becomes less effective.
To combat that, INDOT uses beet juice in combination with salt and brine in low temperature situations. More helpful tips are available at winter.indot.in.gov.
INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert during winter weather events. For updates and traffic alerts, “Like” INDOT on Facebook at www.facebook.com/

Orange County REMC has held a long tradition of helping shape the leaders of tomorrow. The hunt is currently on to find high school juniors to travel to Washington D.C. as part of the Rural Electric Youth Tour.

The REMC is also accepting applications from sixth grade students who want to attend Touchstone Energy Camp at Camp Tecumseh, in Brookston, IN.
Youth Tour to Washington D.C.
Youth Tour was established with one thought in mind – to inspire our next generation of leaders. Since 1964, more than 50,000 young Americans have taken advantage of this special opportunity offered by their electric cooperative.
It all takes place in June, when hundreds of electric co-ops across the country send participants to Washington, D.C. for a chance to learn about the cooperative business model and a full week of sightseeing.
While in D.C., participants have a chance to meet with their elected officials and discuss the issues that are important back home. Without a doubt, Youth Tour has grown into an invaluable program that gives young Americans an experience that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
In February, Orange County REMC will begin the application review process to select local students to attend Youth Tour 2017. Youth Tour is so much more than a sightseeing trip. Students have repeatedly shared that this experience has helped them grow into successful professionals. It has also benefited our local communities. Youth Tour participants return home with a deeper understanding and skill-set of what it takes to be a leader, and as a result, they put these skills to use right here in our community. If you are a high school junior interested in traveling to Washington, D.C. to experience the trip of a lifetime, please contact the REMC for more information.
The deadline to apply is February 10, 2017.
Touchstone Energy Camp
Over the past 16 years, this unique event has educated over 1,000 sixth grade students about how to stay safe around electricity, while also providing campers a chance to enjoy a wide variety of outdoor camp activities. Orange County REMC will once again sponsor students to attend Touchstone Energy® Camp June 7-10, at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, IN.
Campers will enjoy traditional outdoor camp activities, such as horseback riding, zip lining and swimming, while also participating in interactive lessons about safe electricity, working together in teams in a hands-on equipment connecting simulation, and wiring a table top demo to light up a bulb. Plus, they’ll enjoy the bird’s eye view of their friends during bucket truck rides.
Students who are currently in the sixth grade (going into seventh grade in the fall of 2017) are eligible to attend should fill out an application and return it by February 10, 2017.
Operation Round Up Scholarships
Orange County REMC offers local seniors the opportunity to win one of six $750 scholarships.
The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize the academic and community achievements of outstanding young people and assist them in developing an understanding of community issues. One scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from each of the schools in the REMC territory (Paoli, Springs Valley, Orleans, Mitchell, Crawford and West Washington.)
An applicant’s parent, legal guardian, or primary relative must be a member of Orange County REMC, participating in the Operation Round Up program when the scholarship application is judged. Applicants must graduate by the end of June 2017.
Applicants must be accepted into an accredited Indiana College or Indiana Trade School. The scholarship recipient must hold incoming freshman status and NOT have previously attended college.
Deadline for the scholarship program is also February 10, 2017.
Applications and eligibility requirements for these programs are available at www.myremc.coop or by contacting Orange County REMC at 812-865- 2229 or 888-337- 5900 toll free.
Yesterday morning at approximately 10:30 am, trooper Matt Busick from the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg was patrolling in rural Scott County when he saw a car pull into a residence on Lover’s Lane near Lexington, IN, acting suspicious.
