The Washington County EMS team TRIKE SQUAD edged the Salem Fire Department last night on Friday Night on the Square’s First Annual Great WSLM TRIKE RACE to claim the first BIG WHEEL OF SALEM award presented by WSLM’s Becky White.
The EMS team of Keshia Kendall Taylor, Max Gamble, Justin D. Farler and Steve Tye won by a whole trike length.

The Salem Fire Department team finished second, with the Salem Police Department team finishing third.
The relay between the Salem Apothecary and the cross walk by PNC was the course, about 75 feet, involved members of the three four-person teams each taking a turn on the adult-sized trikes.
White said the race was a friendly competition between the three emergency service departments to help people see their fun side. “Friday Night on the Square is a great place to be in the fall of each year in preparation for Old Settlers’ Days and what better way to get everybody excited than with a race.”
The EMS team really got into the spirit, White said. “They have been practicing and also purchased shirts with their team name.”
The group also developed a strategy — providing donuts to the police officers prior to the race, with hopes the treats would slow the racers down.
Mayor Dave Bower served as the emcee and Official Judge.
He announced that a drug test had been administered prior to the race and all racers were qualified to participate.
Steve Brewer, local accountant, was on hand to certify the results.
All trikes were provided by Cornucopia Farms.
