Two meetings this week have special meaning for Washington County residents.

There will be a special meeting on Tuesday, January 22 about a new jail expansion project.

Information about cost and the impact on taxpayers is to be shared during the public hearing that will take place during the Jan. 22 commissioners’ meeting at 10 a.m. in the meeting room at the county government building.

Plans call for a new property tax levy to cover the costs of the project. However, local officials have declined to release what that amount will be until next week’s meeting.

Initial plans are to add a pod to the jail, increasing capacity. Overcrowding is an increasing issue at the facility, which opened in 1987 and was designed to house 56 inmates.

The Washington County Council and the Washington County Commissioners will hold a Joint Special Meeting on January 25, 2013 beginning at 8:00 a.m.  The meeting will be held at the Washington County Government Building Conference Room located at 806 Martinsburg Road, Salem, Indiana 47167.

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss 1) the hiring of two employees at the Highway Department; and 2) the budget shortfall.
