The Senators (18-8) held off a fierce comeback by the Braves (15-10) en route to a Class A Sectional 61 Title Saturday night on Ron Smith Court in T. Kermit Tower Gymnasium.
This is the third sectional title for the school, with wins at the Paoli Sectional coming in 1990 and 1996. And it was the first time in school history West Washington won the sectional
Hunter Sanford led West Washington with 17 points, helping to avenge a regular season loss — 54-38 back during the holiday tournament in December.
The Senators will play North Davies in the Regional Semifinals on Saturday, March 12th at noon. The Rock Creek Lions (16-8) advance to next Saturday’s Loogootee Regional, where they’ll face 19-8 Wood Memorial, the winner of this weekend’s Tecumseh Sectional, in the 10:30 a.m. opener. West Washington (18-8) and North Daviess (14-11) play in the noon game, with the championship set for 8 p.m.
The Senators season started with some doubts, having lost four of their first six games.
Some felt that was attributed to many of the same boys on the team having just finished playing football and were adjusting to basketball.
In 1996, under coach Johnny Budd, the Senators defeated Orleans in the first game of the sectional, 52-45, then went on to rip the Mitchell Bluejackets, 73-52, setting up a final round match against county rival, Salem and dispatched them 93-67 on the way to the regional against Loogootee. The Senators lost 56-74.
