Washington County Historian Jeremy Elliott found this old aerial view of trench warfare, along the Western Front, in France, in with the belongings of Salem’s Charles Baynes (1893-1979), who was a birthright Quaker, but served on the reconstruction force, helping to rebuild & reestablish devastated towns in Europe, from 1918-1920.
Washington County recently celebrated the US entry into World War I with a ceremony on the courthouse grounds.
