On Christmas morning, multiple police agencies worked together to arrest a Madison, Indiana man who fled from police in a vehicle in Jefferson County.
The incident began at approximately 8:40 am when Madison Police Officer Dylan Barnes attempted to stop a red 1996 Dodge truck, being driven by Travis L. Melton, age 18, Madison, on Virginia Drive near Kentucky Avenue.
Melton fled from Officer Barnes in the vehicle. The pursuit went into western Jefferson County where officers lost sight of the vehicle.
Trooper Andrew Garrett soon observed the vehicle near the intersection of Chicken Run Road and Thompson Road and attempted to stop the vehicle.
Melton then fled from Trp. Garrett and Deputy Ben Flint, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department in the vehicle.
A short distance later, Melton’s truck struck a tire deflation device that was deployed in the roadway by Deputy Shane Gibson.
Melton then came to a stop and attempted to resist arrest. Deputy Flint’s K-9 partner, Meko, assisted in apprehending Melton.
Melton was taken into custody and was transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he was initially held on charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving, Operating While Intoxicated, and Criminal Recklessness.
Trp. Garrett was assisted by numerous officers from the Madison Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
