BELLE OF LOUISVILLE WINS BY A BARREL

0

It was a competitive day on the wharf as crews from the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati went head to head, competing in a series of tasks leading up to the historic Kentucky Derby Festival Great Steamboat Race tonight. But it came down to a barrel of bourbon.

Despite being longer and faster than the Belle of Louisville, the Belle of Cincinnati, a BB Riverboat, lost by 21 points — especially after the Cincinnati’s crew were unable to retrieve a barrel of bourbon that somehow was misplaced.

After all the points were tallied, the judges debated and the Mayor weighed in, the coveted 12-point silver antlers stayed with Louisville’s sternwheeler.

“Shenanigans are afoot,” exclaimed Captain Ben Bernstein of the Belle of Cincinnati, who stepped in for his dad, Captain Alan.  He cried foul against Louisville’s Belle. “We’ve been hometowned.”

A task and scoring system determines the winner of the Great Steamboat Race. The Belle of Louisville won 140 to 119, after the Belle of Cincinnati scored zero points for not completing Task No. 9, retrieving a bourbon barrel at Cox Park.  The barrel was nowhere to be found.

Said Mayor Greg Fischer, “This is a clear and decisive victory. The first responsibility is security.  If they lost their barrel, it’s their fault.”

The antlers were awarded to the Belle of Louisville at the Awards Ceremony on the Music Stage inside the Chow Wagon.  Here’s how the Belle’s scored throughout the day:

  • Task No. 1: Jousting inflatable competition (Belle of Louisville 10, Belle of Cincinnati 5)
  • Task No. 2: Obstacle inflatable course (Belle of Louisville 5, Belle of Cincinnati 10)
  • Task No. 3: Handy line toss (Belle of Louisville 10, Belle of Cincinnati 5)
  • Task No. 4: Monkey fist toss (Belle of Louisville 10, Belle of Cincinnati 5)
  • Task No. 5: Miniature Paddle Wheel Assembly (Belle of Louisville 10, Belle of Cincinnati 5)
  • Task No. 6: Calliope contest (Belle of Louisville 5, Belle of Cincinnati 10)
  • Task No. 7: Buoy flag retrieval (Belle of Louisville 25, Belle of Cincinnati 25)
  • Task No. 8: VIP retrieval at Cox Park (Belle of Louisville 25, Belle of Cincinnati 25)
  • Task No. 9: Bourbon barrel head (Belle of Louisville 25, Belle of Cincinnati 0)
  • Task No. 10: Boat race finish (Belle of Louisville 15, Belle of Cincinnati 29)

Major League Baseball today marked the official start of All-Star Balloting for the 86th All-Star Game, which will be held on Tuesday, July 14th at Great American Ball Park, the home of the Cincinnati Reds.

MLB’s All-Star Balloting Program is the largest of its kind in professional sports.  Nearly 160 million ballots have been cast over the past five years, including a record 40.2 million ballots cast in 2012.  In addition, over 300 million votes were submitted in 2014.

For the first time, the All-Star Balloting Program will be conducted exclusively online.  Beginning today, fans around the world can cast their votes for starters 35 times exclusively at MLB.com and all 30 Club web sites – online or via their mobile devices – with the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot.  During the voting period, the Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot will be available in English and Spanish, and will offer audio CAPTCHA functionality for visually-impaired fans.  Traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese versions of the online ballot will be available in May.  Banco BHD will sponsor online All-Star balloting in the Dominican Republic, making Spanish-language ballots available to fans in the Dominican Republic via LasMayores.com, the official Spanish-language Web site of Major League Baseball.

“As we launch our annual tradition of All-Star fan voting, Major League Baseball and the Reds look forward to the upcoming celebration of the Midsummer Classic in a city known for its enduring baseball history,” Baseball Commissioner Robert J. Manfred, Jr. said.  “Baseball fans represent the heart of our game, and through All-Star balloting, I am proud to bring the best that our sport has to offer to the great fans and community of Cincinnati this summer.”

Details regarding the unveiling of the 2015 American League and National League All-Star Teams will be available in the coming weeks.  The AL All-Star Team will have nine elected starters via the fan balloting program, while the NL All-Star Team will have eight fan-elected starters.  The pitchers and reserves for both squads – totaling 25 for the NL and 24 for the AL – will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by the two All-Star managers – NL skipper Bruce Bochy of the defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants and AL manager Ned Yost of the Kansas City Royals.

Following the announcement of the American League and National League All-Star rosters, fans will begin voting to select the final player for each League’s 34-man roster via the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Final Vote.  Fans will cast their votes from a list of five players from each League over the balloting period.  Now in its 14th season with more than 480 million votes cast, fans again will be able to make their Final Vote selections on MLB.com, Club sites and their mobile phones.

This year’s final phase of All-Star Game voting again will have fans participating in the official voting for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet.  During the Midsummer Classic, fans can vote exclusively at MLB.com and the 30 Club sites – online or via their mobile devices – with the 2015 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their collective voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining this year’s recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.

The 2015 All-Star Game will be played at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday, July 14th.  The 86th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 160 countries.  ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game.  MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.  For more information, please visit allstargame.com.

Messel, 49, was accused of bludgeoning 22-year-old Wilson to death. He has been charged with one count of murder.

Messel appeared in the Brown County Circuit Court for the first time at 2:30 p.m. Monday via video conference from Brown County jail.

During the initial hearing, Messel’s jury trial date was set for 8 a.m. July 22.

Circuit Court Judge Judith Stewart entered a preliminary plea of not guilty to allow time for Messel to meet with his assigned public defender, Andrew Szakaly.

Wilson, a psychology student who was set to graduate next month, was reportedly last seen by witnesses outside of Kilroy’s Sports Bar at 1 a.m. Friday, according to a probable cause affidavit. Friends said they paid for a cab ride to her residence, according to the affidavit.

A woman discovered Wilson’s body at 8:30 a.m. Friday as she drove past an abandoned lot early Friday morning in the 5800 block of Plum Creek Road, about 25 miles east of the IU campus.

Investigators have not yet disclosed how Messel and Wilson initially encountered one another, but Messel’s cellphone was found at the scene where Wilson’s body was discovered.

Messel was first arrested Friday evening in connection to Wilson’s murder.

His criminal history dates back to 1993 and involves arrests for drunk driving and felony assault, according to court documents. In 1996, he was sentenced to eight years in prison after he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon. Seven years earlier, according to the Herald-Times archives, Messel was arrested and jailed for confinement after his then-girlfriend told police he wouldn’t let her leave her own apartment.

Messel’s pretrial date is set for 1 p.m. July 6, 2015, at the Brown County Circuit Court.

A bail hearing to determine whether or not Messel is entitled to bond is set for 10:30 a.m. May 15, but may be moved to an earlier date after Messel meets with his public defender.

IU Student Died From Head Injuries, Autopsy Report

0

According to an autopsy report, 22-year-old Hannah Wilson died from blunt force trauma after being struck in the back of the head three or four times.

She also suffered superficial injuries to her hands and arms from attempting to ward off those blows. There was no sign of sexual assault.

Wilson’s body was discovered around 8:30 a.m. Saturday after a woman driving on Plum Creek Road saw Wilson’s body face-down in a vacant lot at State Road 45 and Plum Creek.

Wilson had been dead for 10 hours or less when she was found, according to Brown County Coroner Earl Piper.

Piper, the Brown County coroner, estimated that Wilson, who was first reported missing Friday, had been dead four to seven hours when law enforcement was notified. That would mean between 1:30 and 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Piper said no weapons were found at the crime scene.

Wilson, who is originally from Fishers, was a senior at Indiana University and a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She had been reported missing on Thursday.

Police have arrested 49-year-old Daniel E. Messell of Bloomington and are holding him on a preliminary charge of Murder. Messel has a criminal history.

State Police spokesman said Saturday that no new details on the case will be released until a probable cause affidavit is submitted to the Brown County prosecutor. The spokesman said the investigation is ongoing and that anyone with information about Wilson’s “activities prior to being reported missing” should call the State Police at 812-332-4411.

Messel has had a violent criminal past, including arrests for battery.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison in 1996, after pleading guilty to battery with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious bodily injury.

Messel also pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in 2006. In separate incidents in 1994, he pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

The Bloomington Herald-Times reported that in 1991, Messel was arrested on charges of confinement and domestic battery after a girlfriend made a report to police. In 1989, the newspaper said Messel was arrested after battering his grandmother and breaking a bone in her face.

Messel also filed for bankruptcy in 2013, citing more than $47,000 in debt.

State Rep. Christina Hale, D-Indianapolis, said she has fielded calls from constituents about a possible connection between Wilson’s disappearance and the Uber ride-sharing service, which had been holding a free promotion on the IU campus.

The investigation has been in joint cooperation with the Bloomington Police Department who had taken a Missing Persons report regarding Miss Wilson earlier Friday afternoon.

The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office along with the Brown County Prosecutor and the Brown County Coroner are also involved in the investigation that continues at this time.

The Indiana State Police stresses the filing of criminal charges is only the beginning of the process and Mr. Messell is presumed innocent until and unless guilt is proven in court.

“The entire IU Bloomington community mourns the tragic death of Hannah Wilson,” IU Communications Director Mark Land said in an email. “Our deepest sympathies go out to Hannah’s family and friends during this unspeakably sad time.”
