REDS TRADE MIKE LEAKE TO GIANTS Acquire Louisville Native IF Adam Duvall & SF’s Top Prospect

Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the acquisitions of IF Adam Duvall and RHP Keury Mellafrom the San Francisco Giants in exchange for RHP Mike Leake.

Duvall, 26, was selected by San Francisco in the 11th round of the June 2010 first-year player draft. He grew up in Louisville, where he attended Butler High School, and then played at Western Kentucky University, Chipola Junior College in Florida and the University of Louisville.

This season, Duvall hit .279 with 25 doubles, 26 HR and 79 RBI in 99 appearances for Class AAA Sacramento. Entering Thursday’s games, he led the Pacific Coast League in home runs and total bases (218) while ranking among the league leaders in RBI (2nd) and extra-base hits (53, 2nd). Duvall was PCL Player of the Week in April and a mid-season PCL All-Star.

In his minor league career, Duvall was a mid-season all-star twice, player of the week twice, Milb.com organizational All-Star 3 times and post-season All-Star 3 times. In his Major League debut on June 26 of last season, he homered off Leake for his first career hit.

Mella, 21, was signed by the Giants as a non-drafted free agent in September 2011. In his 4-season professional career, in 57 career minor league starts and 1 relief appearance he is 15-12 with a 3.01 ERA and 282 strikeouts in 272.1 innings.

In 16 starts this season at high Class A San Jose, Mella went 5-3 and ranks fourth in the California League with a 3.31 ERA. He was a Cal League mid-season All-Star, was selected to play in this summer’s SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Great American Ball Park and currently is ranked by MLB.com’s MLB Pipeline as the top prospect in the Giants’ organization.

 

Leake, 27, this season for the Reds posted a 9-5 record and 3.56 ERA in 21 starts.

New Albany Man Arrested for Theft of Military Items

On November 18, 2014, the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg received a complaint of burglary and theft from the National Guard Armory located in New Albany, IN. During the theft several items were taken including; police style tasers, taser cartridges, police style pepper spray and other police/military style items.user29380-1438278987-media1

Shortly after this, items like the ones taken started appearing on social media sites for sale. Detective Rachel Abbott from the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg was able to recover these items. During her continued investigation she was able to find other items that had been stolen totaling to approximately $10,300.00.

As the case progressed, Detective Abbott was able to obtain enough probable cause to request an arrest warrant out of the Floyd County Circuit Court in New Albany. As a result of the request on May 13th an arrest warrant was issued for Cody K. Proffitt, 23, from New Albany. The arrest warrant was for Theft, a Level Six Felony.

Cody K. Proffitt was arrested early this morning and is being housed at the Clark County Jail awaiting extradition to Floyd County.

Although an arrest has taken place, troopers are still searching for several items that have not been located. There are seven tasers along with more police style pepper spray and numerous live and training style taser cartridges, a USB Data Download Port and several pouches that are used to hold the police style pepper spray when not in use.

Alton Dean Morris, 67

Mr. Alton Dean Morris age 67 of Salem passed away Monday, July 27 at University of Louisville Hospital.

Mr. Morris was born December 31, 1947 in Scottsburg the son of Burnice and Mae Nicholson Morris.  He was a retired employee of Shamrock International in Louisville and also as owner/operator of Dean’s Mechanic and Welding in Salem.  He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church and National and State Massey Harris Club.  He was a past member of American Legion and Tri-State Antique Machinery Club.  He was a Vietnam War Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife:  Brenda Alexander Morris.  They were married May 17, 1969.  He is also survived by two daughters:  Deanna Morris and Tina Sidwell (Andy) both of Salem, three brothers:  Randall Morris of Freetown, Ronald Morris and Billy Morris both of Salem, a sister:  Loretta Strock of Dover, Florida, five grandchildren:  Rodney Gaddis (Amanda Godfrey), Glenn Gaddis, Bailey Sidwell and Hailey Sidwell, and one great-grandson:  Lennon Godfrey.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00AM at Weathers Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Franklin Cemetery with military honors.  Visitation will be Thursdayfrom 4-8PM and Friday from 9AM-time of service.

Lillian E. Martin, 87

Lillian E. Martin, age 87, of Salem, formerly of Campbellsburg, passed away on Monday July 27, 2015 in Schneck Memorial

Hospital in Seymour. Born on June 4, 1928 in Medora, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late William J. Dixon Jr. and Iva

Mae (Jordan) Dixon. On December 23, 1943, she married Dale Martin.

Lillian was a homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Campbellsburg. She was a member of the

Salem Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #286 and a Past Worthy Matron of the Campbellsburg Chapter Order of the Eastern

Star #258.

Survivors include: 2 daughters, Marcella A. Russell (Rick) of Salem, and Brenda Kay Keith (Kevin) of Indianapolis; 2

brothers, Tom Dixon of Bradenton, Florida, and Ralph Dixon of Lombard, Illinois; 8 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren,

and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Preceded in death: husband, Dale Martin; son, Marvin Martin; brother, Richard Dixon; sister, Mary Singer-Trowbridge.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Saturday at the Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Campbellsburg. Viewing will be from

4-8 PM Friday at the Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home in Salem with an Eastern Star Service at 7:00 PM, and from 9 AM

Saturday until time of service at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Brother Don Mahan will officiate.

Barbara Horner, 79

Barbara Horner, age 79 of Salem, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015 at 5:05 pm, in her residence.

Born April 28, 1936 in Pelahatchie, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Claude Banks and Quinnie Mae (Sheeley) Jenkins. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Salem.

She married May 3, 1957 to Gerald “Jerry” W. Horner, who survives.

Also surviving are: Daughter: Lois Elaine (Eric) Lansford; Son: Gerald Wayne (Teresa) Horner Jr.; Brother: Bill R. Jenkins; 2 Sisters: Kaye Holmes and Eula Mae Nutt and Grandchildren, Mathew and Nicole Horner and Jessica Lansford. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers C.B., Thomas and Reid Jenkins and 2 sisters; Juanita Croom & Audrey Jenkins.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am Friday at Dawalt Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Steven Gorman officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Thursday and after 9 am Friday. Interment at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Fredericksburg Man Arrested for Child Molesting

On Sunday, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department arrested Joseph Dion Ater, Jr, 34, from 350 US Highway 50 in Fredericksburg.

The arrest came after Detective Scott Stewart from the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg was notified by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in December of 2014 of a female being allegedly molested by Joseph D. Ater, Jr.

After completing the investigation Detective Stewart turned the case into the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office who sought and received an arrest warrant for Ater, Jr.

The arrest warrant was issued out of the Washington County Circuit Court for Child Molesting, Felony.

Patricia L. Ewing, 83

Mrs. Patricia L. Ewing age 83 of Salem passed away Sunday, July 26 at Salem Crossing.

Mrs. Ewing was born January 13, 1932 in Tell City, Indiana the daughter of Harold and Bernice Snyder Harlen.  She was retired from Bob’s Cleaners.  Patricia was baptized Catholic and was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband:  Elzie R. Ewing and her parents.

She is survived by two sons:  Harold “Reggie” Ewing (Cindy) and Eric “Randy” Ewing (Cindy) both of Salem, two daughters:  Cathy M. Pumphrey (Donald) and Carasena L. Shields both of Salem, a brother:  William Harlen of Salem, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:00PM at Weathers Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8PM and Thursday from 9AM-time of service.

Gregory Lee Shell, 49

Gregory Lee Shell age 49 of Salem passed away Saturday, July 25.

Mr. Shell was born July 1, 1966 in Salem the son of Preston Shell and Margaret Blevins Shell Hawes. He was an employee of Austin Tri-Hawk Automotive. He was a member of West Side Baptist Church and American Legion.

He is survived by two sons: Ryan Shell and Isaiah Shell both of Salem, a daughter: Megan Shell Young (Israel) of Salem, a step-son: Nick Richie of Columbus, two step-daughters: Tiffany Searcy of Austin and Sabrina Floyd (Brennan) of Salem, his parents: Preston and Margie Shell and Margaret Hawes all of Salem, five brothers: John Shell (Angie) of Salem, David McCormick (Carrie) of Salem, Peter McCormick (Kellie) of Pekin, Josh Hardin (Heather) of Cleveland, Ohio and Tyson Shell of Salem, two sisters: Rhonda and Hannah Shell both of Salem, and three grandchildren: Kamryn Shell, Nile and Wyatt Young. He was preceded in death by a brother: Isaiah Shell.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00PM at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00AM until time of service.

Cobert Lee Campbell, 82

Cobert Lee Campbell, age 82 of Salem, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 7:59 am, in the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Born June 23, 1933 in Pekin, Indiana, he was the son of the late Joe and Stella (Stewart) Campbell.

He was the owner of Cobert Campbell Woodcrafts and was a former employee of the old Morris Payne Implements and the Curtis Breeding Service. He was a self-employed carpenter and had worked on many projects in Washington County.

He was a member of the Canton Christian Church, served in the Armed Forces as a Corporal in the U.S. Marines, had been a life resident of Washington County and was a 1952 graduate of Pekin High School. Cobert married October 25, 1959 to Ruthie (Smith) Campbell, who survives.

Also surviving are: Daughter: Lana (Duane) Hamilton, Salem; Brother: Glenn Campbell, Oregon; Granddaughter: Paige Hamilton and Grandson: Bailey Hamilton, Salem. He was preceded in death by 1 Brother, Caudell Campbell and 1 Sister, Jannetta Vasconselous.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am Tuesday at Dawalt Funeral Home with Pastor Toney Voyles officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Monday and after 9 am Tuesday. Interment at Blue River Christian Cemetery.

Wade Alan Stephenson, 42

Wade Alan Stephenson, age 42 of Fredericksburg, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 9:51 am, in the University Of Louisville Hospital.

Born August 12, 1972 in New Albany, Indiana, he was the son of Bruce Alan and Jane (Jackson) Stephenson. He was a self-employed piano technician, a member of the Sovereign Grace Church in Louisville and had been a life resident of Washington County.

He was a 1990 graduate of Salem High School and received a Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University Southeast in 1999.

Wade married December 28, 2002 to Rebecca Joy (Heid) Stephenson, who survives.

Also surviving are: 3 Daughters: Nora, Phoebe and Bonnie Stephenson, Salem; Baby Son: Nicholas Wade Stephenson; Parents: Bruce and Jane Stephenson, Salem; 2 Sisters: Tracy Stephenson Weaver, Borden and Sarah Haynes Leach, Campbellsburg; 1 Brother: Wesley Stephenson, Salem and Grandmother: Ruby Jackson, Scottsburg.

He was preceded in death by grandparents: Harry Jackson and Nelson & Wilma Stephenson.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday July 26th at 4 pm at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary – Heritage Hall in Louisville.

There will be a visitation from 9 am to Noon on Monday July 27th at the Dawalt Funeral
Home with a Graveside Service immediately following the visitation at Mount Eden Cemetery.
