IU’s Fisher leaves team

0

Indiana was supposed to simply be putting the finishing touches on preparation for today’s Big Ten opener, at Illinois.

But at 10 o’clock Monday morning, freshman center Luke Fischer changed all that.

bilde

“He told us this morning at about 10 O’clock that he wanted to do something different,” said IU Coach Tom Crean. “It’s always in those situations that timing issues can surprise you, but I can’t stand here and say that I was in complete shock. I wish him the best, we will miss his potential, we will miss him as a person. He did an outstanding job here academically and he is an excellent young man. It wasn’t anything that anyone really saw coming.”

“Luke had great potential, there is no doubt about that. It creates a situation where people will take advantage of the opportunity. That is all you can really ask for. Time does not wait for anybody.”

Fischer met with Crean Monday morning. Despite having played every game this season and having seen double digit minutes in his last four games as his role expanded, the former Wisconsin Mr. Basketball was moving on.

“He told us that he wanted to do something different,” Crean said after Monday afternoon’s practice.

No official reason was given and no potential school was mentioned.

US to stop making regular light bulbs

Starting New Year‘s Day, the U.S. will stop making those round-headed, incandescent light bulbs.

Manufacturers will shift full production onto the more energy-efficient, Compact Flourescent Lamp (CFLs) bulbs. Those are the ones that look like curly fries. Purdue University State Utility Forecasting Group Director Douglas Gotham says manufacturers had already begun phasing out the 100 and 75-watt incandescent bulbs back in 2012.

Even though some folks don‘t like the newer bulbs, Gotham says the move is all about energy efficiency. Gotham says lighting remains an area where environmental efficiencies are still needed. Retailers are expected to continue to sell the old, incandescent bulbs until supplies run out.

Gotham says folks who don‘t like CFL bulbs may want to try out LED lightbulbs which are even more energy efficient, but they‘re also more expensive.

Purdue Predicts Electric Rates to Increase by 32 percent by 2023

Purdue University researchers are predicting electricity rates in Indiana will rise about 32 percent by 2023. They say this will happen as demand for
electricity will virtually stagnate.

Demand is predicted to grow by .74 percent a year over the next 20 years. Researchers cite higher rates and a push toward greater energy efficiency as reasons for stagnant demand.

And they blame the projected rise in rates on new federal mercury and air toxic standards, costs associated with meeting future demand and with upgrading existing electricity generating plants.
