E. Eugene “Gene” Miller, Salem

0

E. Eugene “Gene” Miller passed from this life to the next on January 11, 2023 at his home in Sellersburg, Indiana after a brief illness.

He is the son of Elmo and Evelyn Brown Miller, but was reared by his uncle and aunt, Darrell and Wilma Miller of Pekin. Gene had several jobs during
his lifetime, including UPS driver, banker, minister, and insurance agent.

Although his jobs changed over the years, his life’s mission never did, which was to glorify God in the way he lived.

Gene’s hobbies included fishing (where he applied a strict “catch and eat” philosophy), riding his bicycle, discussing Scriptures with anyone who would listen, and eating delicious desserts made by Mary, his wife of 60 years.

Other surviving members of the family include Brian Miller (and Jennifer) of Searcy, Arkansas, Beth Miller (and Ross) of Jacksonville, Florida, Donna Norris of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Bradley Miller of Louisville, Kentucky.

His beloved grandchildren are Chase Haynes (and Rachel), Darby Gaines (and Derek), McKenzie Price (and Trey), Tennyson Douglas, Kendrick Douglas, Grant Norris, Logan Norris, and Lauren Norris.

He is also survived by six sisters and one brother; Anita Disponett, Nancy Little, Shirley Wright, Phyllis Graves, Joyce Mull (and Jerry), Cindi Arbuckle (and Brian), R.E. Miller (and Connie). Gene also had six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elmo and Evelyn Miller, Darrell and Wilma Miller, and one
brother, D.L. Miller.

Gene loved his family dearly, but his greatest love was Jesus Christ.

He loved talking to people about the love of Jesus, whether it was during an individual conversation or from the pulpit of one of the local
Churches of Christ.

He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Child
Safety Center of White County (childsafetycenter.org), which is located
in Searcy, Arkansas and assists children in crisis.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday at Dawalt Funeral Home in Salem, Indiana and from 9 am to 11 Saturday January 14th, at Big Springs Church of
Christ in Pekin, Indiana.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 am at the
church with a committal service to follow at Olive Branch Cemetery near Pekin, Indiana.

Late Tuesday evening, Trooper Kyle Taylor responded to a possible drug overdose with deputies from the Scott and Washington County Sheriff’s Departments.

The residence is on SR 39 in Washington County; however, it has a Scottsburg address. When Trooper Taylor arrived, Scott County Deputies were on-scene providing CPR to a female victim who was later identified as 33-year-old Alice Dyan Cook of Scottsburg.

EMS transported Cook to the Scott County Hospital.

Tragically, despite life-saving measures, Cook was pronounced deceased after arriving at the hospital.

As the investigation continued, Trooper Taylor located suspected heroin and marijuana at the residence.

Trooper Taylor also identified two others present at the address as 35-year-old Errol Reardon and 33-year-old Rachel Gibson, both of Henryville, Indiana.

As a result of the investigation, Trooper Taylor arrested both Reardon and Gibson on the following preliminary charges:

  2. Dealing in Cocaine or Narcotic Drug – Level 4 Felony.
  3. Possession of Cocaine or Narcotic Drug – Level 6 Felony.
  4. Possession of Paraphernalia – A misdemeanor.
  5. Possession of Marijuana – B Misdemeanor.

Officers transported Rachel Gibson and Errol Reardon to the Washington County Jail without further incident.

The next-of-kin has been notified.

drawn wagon and then to a delivery truck.

Following graduation from Salem High School in 1944 he joined the US Army and served in France and Germany only later to be recalled in 1950 for the Korean War. After years of service in the military he was later discharged from the
Indiana National Guard in 1986.

asked a lot of questions and always had a project or a new idea in mind.
He was proud to be from Salem and especially proud that he and his
brother, Warren, established Warren’s Sweet Shop which is now H&R
Bakery. He, along with Frank Ball, developed and constructed homes
becoming Fair Acres. Sharing stories with his family of banking,
business, community service and traveling all 7 continents of the world
made for educational conversations at every Sunday family dinner.
Up until death he was still serving on committees involving the City of
Salem, Washington County, State of Indiana and the US Army. He was

delegate to at least 5 national conventions.
