Knightstown Woman Arrested in Salem for Domestic Battery Charges
- Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Bodily Injury, Level 5 Felony
- Domestic Battery, Level 6 Felony
On Wednesday, December 4, Master Trooper Detective Travis Baker, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Child Services, began an investigation into the alleged battery of a 4-year-old child.
Detective Baker met with Dean Thursday evening.
The Indiana State Police encourages anyone who believes a child has been harmed or is in a potentially dangerous or harmful situation to report the circumstances to either the Indiana Department of Child Services or a law enforcement agency as soon as possible.

Larry “Joe” Allen, 81, of Salem
Larry “Joe” Allen, 81, of Salem, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Meadowview Health & Rehab Center.
Larry was the county’s locksmith for over 50 years as the owner of Allen Lock & Key. He also served his country in the United States Air Force, and was a past Master of the Crescent Hill Masonic Lodge in Louisville.
Larry is survived by his wife of 28 years, Debbie (Scott) Allen of Salem; his 2 children: Katherine Wheatley of Salem, and Larry Allen Jr (Carrie) of Kannapolis, NC; and his grandchildren: Brandon Wheatley, Keramie Wheatley and Tatum Grace Allen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Johnny; and 2 sisters: Judy and Mary Jane.
Larry will be laid to rest at the New Albany National Cemetery. Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home was entrusted with his care.
Edward A. “Ed” Puite, 47, of Pekin
Edward A. “Ed” Puite, 47, of Pekin, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Baptist Health Louisville. Born March 4, 1977 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was the son of the late Roy Puite and Robin (Fox) Borton.
Edward was a road crew equipment operator for McCrite Milling, and a member of IUOE Local 841.
Edward is survived by his children: Jarrett Simon, Jamie Lynn Simon and Gabby Simon; 2 brothers: Eric Puite and Tony Puite; 2 sisters: Sandra Puite and Tanya DePue; 3 extended children: Jordan Wilson, Adalee Brough and Carissa Shepherd; and 2 extended granddaughters: Callie Shepherd and Camilla Shepherd.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Jason Puite.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 7, at 11 a.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home – Pekin Chapel. Visitation will be on Friday, December 6, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

30, 2024 at 03:08 pm, in Meadow View Health & Rehabilitation Salem,
Indiana.
Born April 25, 1976 in Salem, Indiana, he was the son of Dennis Eugene
Hollen and Vickie (Fox) Hollen.
Life resident of Washington County, he was a former employee of the old
ChildCraft Industries in Salem and a former employee of Blue River
Hardwoods, INC.

Sharon Rose Nelson, age 85, of Salem
Sharon Rose Nelson, age 85, of Salem, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, December 3rd, leaving behind a legacy of service, and dedication to her family and community.
Born on June 18, 1939, in Washington County, Sharon was the daughter of Robert E. Cauble and Ethel Hattabaugh Cauble Schneider.
A woman of faith, she was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Salem and an active participant in the Salem and Mitchell Senior Citizens Centers.
Sharon spent over three decades as the Director of Salem Parks and Recreation, becoming the longest-serving director in the city’s history. Her life’s work revolved around enriching the lives of Salem’s youth and creating lasting memories for families.
She developed many of the city parks still loved by citizens today. Her enthusiasm shone in summers running the City Pool, her tireless efforts in organizing beloved community events like the town-wide Easter egg hunt and Halloween costume contest, and her unwavering commitment to youth football and softball programs that positively impacted thousands of children over the years.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sharon had a compassionate heart. She dedicated many years as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), supporting children in need in Washington County.
Sharon’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving children: Dennis Nelson (Sally) of Indianapolis, Ronnie Nelson of Salem, and Mindy Guthrie of Salem; her sister Bobbi Sue Arens of Florida; seven grandchildren: Holly, Tommy, Correna, Melinda, Andrea, Adam, and Kendra; and seven great-grandchildren who brought light to her life – as well as many dear friends.
She now reunites in peace with her parents and the children she has deeply missed: Dan Nelson, Robbie Nelson, Jeff Nelson, and Sherri Jo Merola.
Services celebrating Sharon’s life will be held at 11 AM on Friday at Weathers Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 4-8pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salem Senior Citizen’s Center.
Evelyn Marie Smith, age 80 of Salem
Evelyn Marie Smith, age 80 of Salem, Indiana passed away Tuesday,
November 19, 2024, at 02:30 pm, at Salem Crossing. Born October 26, 1944
in Carrollton, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Melvin Combs
and Lillie (Eads) Combs.
She was an employee of Maple Manor Christian Home Sellersburg, IN. She
attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt
Lake City, Utah. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and an amazing
nurse. In her spare time, she loved to read, watch movies, and hangout
with her dog.
Survivors include: Daughter: Candace (Walter) Moss of Pekin, Indiana;
Son: David Burnett of Salem, Indiana; Son: Vernon Smith of Salem,
Indiana; Granddaughter: Erica Hobson of Salem, Indiana; Grandson:
Michael Peacock of Florida; Grandson: Sean Burnett of Jeffersonville,
Indiana; Granddaughter: Lillie Burnett of Salem, Indiana.
Granddaughter: Sakyia Farris of Clarksville, Indiana; Granddaughter:
Miranda Smith of Salem, Indiana; Granddaughter: Jillian Smith of Salem,
Indiana. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, and 8 great
grandchildren. She is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Ethel Lucille Martin, age 99, of Pekin
Ethel Lucille Martin, age 99, of Pekin, passed away Friday, November 22 at her home.
Lucille was born September 15, 1925, in Manson, Iowa the daughter of Samuel Lewis and Viola Catherine Rippy Jones. Her mother passed away when she was small and she was raised by William and Etta Motsinger. She was a member of Salem First Baptist Church, and Piecemakers Quilt Guild. She helped organize the Washington County Art Guild. Lucile was retired from the ASCS office and had also worked at Salem Creamery, and Wash/Scott County Farm Bureau Co-op. In 1980, Lucille and her sons built and ran a recreational park, Back Akers in Pekin.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband: Kenneth Martin on November 21, 2022. She was also preceded in death by four brothers: Kennith Jones, Hollis Jones, Orville Jones, and Franklin Jones, three sisters: Laverne Wetzel, Mildred Mosier, Cletus Mae Coomer and a half sister: Maxine Spurgeon, and one grandson: Bret Hammond. She is survived by two sons: Terry Hammond (Virginia) of Pekin and Tommy Hammond of Pekin, four grandchildren: Christine Sowder (David), Jody Hammond (Summer), Clay Hammond and Ben Hammond, five great-grandchildren: Olivia, Ava, and Vance Sowder, Cooper and Lucy Hammond, as well as many bonus children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11AM at Weathers Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Steve Gorman officiating. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-6PM and Monday from 10AM-time of service at the funeral home.

Lisa Ann Tyler, age 62, of Salem
Lisa Ann Tyler, age 62, of Salem, passed away Friday, November 22, 2024 at Norton Hospital in Louisville.
Mrs. Tyler was born February 2, 1962 in Salem the daughter of Hobert Walton and Viola Mount Walton. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Salem, and a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association. She was a volunteer at East Washington School Corp. for 13 years. Lisa was a 4-H leader for 37 years.
She is survived by her husband: James E. Tyler of Salem, a daughter: Erin Roberts (Kyle) of Hardinsburg, and a sister: Barbara McGinnis (Bryan) of Pekin, a sister-in-law: Sherry Walton of Salem. She is preceded in death by two brothers: Kenneth Walton, and Kerry Walton, and her parents.
