Glen Davis Wells, age 87, of Borden

Glen Davis Wells, age 87, of Borden, Indiana, passed away Saturday January 5, 2019 at his residence. Born on October 25, 1931 in Borden, he was the son of the late Elmo Harbin Wells and Florence Gertrude Harned Wells.

Glen delivered the Grit Paper to all everyone around Borden. He enjoyed his garden and loved the outdoors.

He is survived by his sister, Roberta Karnes and her husband Kermit, of Borden.

He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Charles Warren Wells and Bobby Wells.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home in Borden. Viewing will be Monday from 4-8 PM and Tuesday from 9:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mt. Washington Cemetery. 

Bobbie Jean Cosby, age 83, of Pekin

Bobbie Jean Cosby, age 83, of Pekin, Indiana, passed away on January 3, 2019 at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital. Born on February 11, 1935 in Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Helen Murrel Campbell.

Bobbie Jean was a homemaker and member of Pekin United Methodist Church.

She is survived by 2 sons, Steve Cosby and David Cosby; 4 daughters, Debbie Bottorff, Diana Jacobs, Karen Hobson and Pam Trainor; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Cosby; 1 son, Bradley Cosby; granddaughter, Kelley Bottorff; 1 brother and 2 sisters.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, January 14, at 4:00 PM at the Pekin United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 3:30 PM until time of service at the church. Bro. Mark Zerkel will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Pekin United Methodist Church.

William “Bill” A. Stewart Jr, age 81, of Pekin

William “Bill” A. Stewart Jr, age 81, of Pekin, Indiana, passed away on December 30, 2018 at Floyd Memorial Hospital. Born on December 13, 1937 in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late William A. Stewart Sr. and Frances L. Stewart.

Bill was a retired general contractor at Frank Shaffer Contracting. He was a member of Jaycees, and the Kentucky Colonels. 

He is survived by his wife, Lois June Stewart; son, William A. Stewart III and his wife, Kelly; daughter, Pamela Crady and her husband Daniel; 3 brothers, David Brady, Norman Beirod and Charles J. Stewart; sister, Nancy Coyle; 5 grandchildren, Sabrina Porter and her husband Darick, Zachary Stewart, Dylan Stewart, Valerie Hobson and Daniel McNutt; 3 great grandchildren, Devin Hortenberry, Issac Hortenberry and Marshall Jenkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Deloris Pryor.

Direct cremation was chosen.

Following too Closely Results in Drug Arrest

Two from Ohio were arrested Friday afternoon after a traffic stop.

Arrested were Brooklyn Wagner, age 23, and Kortinee Glenn, age 26, both of Springfield, OH. 

Both were charged with Dealing and Possession of Meth. 

 

Friday afternoon at 2:55, an Indiana State Police Trooper was working along Interstate 70.

The Trooper observed a grey 2008 Mercury Mariner traveling westbound near the 48-mile marker in violation of following too closely.

A traffic stop was initiated and during the stop, several indicators of possible criminal activity were detected.

A K-9 unit was called and a free air sniff was conducted resulting in a positive alert for narcotics.

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded 15-pounds of suspected methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $30,000 dollars. The methamphetamine was individually vacuum sealed into 14 individual plastic bags.

Both were Incarcerated in the Putnam County Jail

Traffic Stop For a Tail Light Out Leads to Felony Drug Charges

Last night a traffic stop for a tail light out led to the arrest of a Marion man on felony drug charges.  Just before 10 p.m. last night Trooper Blake Stephenson was sitting on the side of SR 13, in the area of Madison County Road 700 N. when he noticed a pickup driving by north bound with a tail light out. 

Stephenson pulled out and went after the vehicle and got it stopped on SR 13 just north of SR 128. As he spoke to the driver, Stephenson could smell the odor of alcohol and burnt marijuana inside the vehicle.  Elwood Officer Mills was nearby and came to assist Stephenson, along with two Madison County Deputies.

Further investigation by the officers found that the driver, Thaddeus Cardwell, age 27 of Marion, was operating with a suspended driver’s license as a Habitual Traffic Violator. Officers also located a rock substance believed to be Methamphetamine and white powder believed to be cocaine in the truck, along with alcohol. 

Although Cardwell had consumed alcohol he was not over the legal limit of .08% B.A.C.; However he was arrested for felony Possession of Methamphetamine and felony Possession of Cocaine, as well as felony Operating While License Suspended as a Habitual Traffic Violator. Cardwell was lodged in the Madison County Jail.

Columbus Man Killed in Bartholomew County Crash

Yesterday, January 3, 2019, at approximately 8:00 pm, the Indiana State Police responded to a single vehicle crash in rural Bartholomew County that claimed the life of an 18 year old Columbus man and sent an 18 year old Columbus woman to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries.

The initial investigation by Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionist Trp. Matt Holley indicated that a 2006 Mazda passenger car, being driven by Kyle N. Hall, age 18, Columbus, Indiana was traveling northbound on County Road 250 East, just north of County Road 275 South. For an unknown reason, Hall lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the east side of the roadway and rolled several times before coming to a stop.

As a result of the collision, Kyle Hall sustained fatal injuries. He was transported to an area hospital where he passed away as a result of his injuries. A passenger in the vehicle, Lilly E. Hall, age 18, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and sustained serious injuries. She was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana for treatment.

Toxicology results are pending at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Hall family has been notified.

It is believed that Kyle and Lilly Hall were married.

Trp. Holley was assisted by Troopers David Owsley and Derek Eggers, Indiana State Police-Versailles Post, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, Columbus Regional EMS, Elizabethtown Fire Department, and Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office.

Harmon Wins 2019 High School Teacher of the Year Award

Bonnie Harmon continues bringing firsts to Salem Schools. 

She brought Salem’s first state title – for best marching band in 2013.

She became the first Salem teacher to be named president of the Indiana High School Music Association in 2018. 

Now she’s been honored as 2019 High School Teacher of the Year from the Indiana Music Education Association. 

“I am so very honored to be recognized with this award,” Harmon said. “I’ve been a member of IMEA and MENC since I was a college student. I respect this organization so much and to be honored by them is truly humbling.”
 
Harmon will receive the award at a ceremony on January 19 at the Embassy Theater at the beginning of the IMEA Honors Band Concert as part of the annual Professional Development Conference in Fort Wayne. 
 
“IMEA is the Indiana Music Educators Association and MENC is the Music Educators National Conference, which is now called NAfME – the National Association for Music Education,” note Harmon.

From Owensville, Indiana, Harmon graduated from the University of Evansville with a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s in secondary education from Indiana University.

After coming to Salem, she has served as chairman of the middle school fine arts department. Harmon continues to teach music classes at Salem Middle School and works as co-president of the Salem Classroom Teachers Association.

Harmon has been a band director at Salem for nearly 30 years and has taught and directed for more than 35 years total.

2019 Reds Caravan set for Jan. 17-20; Stopping in Salem for Fifth Visit

The 2019 Cincinnati Reds Caravan kicks off Thursday, Jan. 17 and will travel more than 3,800 miles with stops in five states over four days.

The South Caravan group will be stopping by Reds on Radio Affiliate WSLM on January 17 for a private meet and greet.  This is the fifth stop in Salem for the Reds Caravan. 

Mid Southern Savings Bank in Salem will be signing up customers and fans to attend the event. Two lucky winners will be invited to the private event to meet the Reds players and management as well as get an autograph signed. 

The four Caravan tours travel through Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee providing fans of all ages with the opportunity to interact with current and former players, top minor leaguers, broadcasters, members of the Reds front office staff, and mascots. 

At each of the 17 fan stops, the groups will field questions and sign autographs while time allows.

All Caravan fan stops are free and open to the public, and at each fan stop the Reds will raffle two tickets to the 2019 Opening Day game on Thursday, March 28 (4:10 pm) vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates.

For the fourth year in a row, the Reds Caravan will culminate with the Caravan Finale at the Florence Mall in Florence, Ky. on Sunday, Jan. 20. Doors to the mall open at 9 a.m. and the Q&A with players will begin at 11 a.m. From Noon to 2 p.m., fans can get autographs with current players and photos with Reds alumni and minor leaguers.

The Reds Caravan is presented by the Cincinnati USA Regional Tourism Network.
