Fort Wayne angler catches state record spotted gar on Rivir Lake at Chain O’Lakes State Park

0
Fort Wayne resident Kyle Hammond caught a 9-pound, 11-ounce spotted gar on Rivir Lake in Chain O’Lakes State Park on July 11, besting the previous Indiana state record of a 6-pound, 12.5-ounce fish caught in 2017 from a gravel pit in Vermillion County.

Hammond was targeting gar from his kayak and landed the record catch within 20 minutes of starting to fish. He was using a spinning rod and reel with a white zoom fluke.

The Hoosier angler captured the entire catch on video as part of his hobby of actively posting his fishing trips on his YouTube channel, Indiana Kayak Fishing Journal. Hammond is also the current state record holder for shortnose gar, having caught that record fish in 2021.

Gar are usually found in shallow water around vegetation and have been seen in 71% of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fisheries biologists’ glacial lake surveys. Anglers who want to target the species or another Indiana sport fish can use DNR’s Fisheries Status & Trends dashboard to find lakes where they are most abundant.

Road Work in Brown and Clark Counties

0

Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews are scheduled to temporarily close State Road 45 at Bear Creek Road on or after Tuesday, August 13, to complete a culvert installation in Brown County.

The closure will take place between Helmsburg and Needmore and is expected to take up to one day, weather permitting. During the closure, motorists should detour using S.R. 46.

Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews plan to begin chip seal operations on State Road 62 in Clark County on or after Thursday, August 8. Crews will be active between State Road 3 in Charlestown and State Road 362. Motorists should expect lane closures and flagging while work is in progress.

Chip seal work typically lasts three to four days per location depending upon weather. During operations, existing pavement is coated with liquid asphalt, which seals cracks and provides waterproof protection. This extends the service life of the roadway and lowers maintenance costs. Once the seal coat is complete, loose aggregate is applied and swept from the road. After a curing period, crews will return to fog seal the new driving surface and apply pavement markings.

Chip seal is a cost-effective pavement preservation technique that is utilized across the state of Indiana, saving an estimated six to 14 dollars in taxpayer expenditures for every dollar invested in extending the life of a roadway.
