Hoosiers Conducting Missions Critical to Our Nation’s Cyber Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) visited Fort Meade to meet with members of the Indiana National Guard who are mobilized to improve our nation’s cyber capabilities. Fourteen members of the Indiana National Guard are serving as part of Task Force Echo.

Senator Young with members of the Indiana National Guard serving at Fort Meade and with Colonel John Branch (front row far left), Commander of the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade.

“Our nation confronts serious cyber threats, and the Indiana National Guard is playing an indispensable and pioneering role conducting cyber operations that are vital to our deployed troops and the national security of the United States. I’m so proud of my fellow Hoosiers serving at Fort Meade, and I will continue to do all I can to ensure they have the support and resources they need to conduct their missions and protect our country,”said Senator Young.

In addition to meeting with members of the Indiana National Guard, Senator Young also received briefings from the leadership of Army Cyber Command, the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade, and Task Force Echo to gain further insight into the Department of Defense’s cyber activities and the critical role of the Indiana National Guard.

Three local high school athletes were named to the Indiana Academic All-Star List.

The Indianapolis Colts, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) will recognize 25 outstanding student-athletes with the 2017 Indiana Academic All-Stars Award.

Wide Receiver Tanner Packwood from West Washington and Defensive Back Deitrich Sears from Paoli High School were recognized.

Defensive Back Joseph Clate Winters of Madison High School was also named to the list.

The student-athletes will be honored during an awards presentation prior to the game against Tennessee on Sunday, November 26.  The 2017 honorees will also be recognized during pre-game in front of the Lucas Oil Stadium crowd. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. EST.

2017 marks the 19th year the Colts, the IHSAA and the IFCA have partnered to present this annual award to Indiana’s top football student-athletes.

The IFCA polled high school head coaches around the state, and the coaches tabbed 25 athletes ranked in the top of their respective classes. Of the players selected, there are 21 valedictorians and all 25 players are in the top 2.2% of their graduating classes.

“Congratulations to the 25 outstanding student-athletes who were selected by our committee to represent their schools this past football season. Special thanks to the Irsay family and the Indianapolis Colts organization for their continuing support of Indiana high school football,” said Toby Jacobs, who is part of the IFCA Colts Academic All-State Committee.

ISP Bloomington to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint

0

Troopers from the Indiana State Police Bloomington Post will be conducting a sobriety check point at an undisclosed location in Monroe County on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017.

Drivers passing through the checkpoint area should have their license and registration available and will only wait briefly while troopers determine whether further investigation is necessary.

Hoosiers are asked to help do their part in making Indiana roadways safer by observing the following tips:

• Plan ahead and always use a designated driver.
• Don’t get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you’ve been consuming alcoholic beverages. Instead, call a taxi, a family member or friend who has not been drinking to give you a ride.
• If you are hosting a party, always offer non-alcoholic beverages and make sure all of your guests leave with a sober driver or allow them to spend the night.
• Remember, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk! Take the keys and never let a friend leave your sight if you think that they are about to drive while impaired.

Anyone observing erratic driving should call 911 immediately and be prepared to give a detailed description of the vehicle, its location and direction of travel. Callers can remain anonymous.

The Indiana State Police are committed to traffic safety and will continue to conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints to apprehend impaired drivers and to deter others from drinking and driving.

Indiana Department of Transportation’s contractor closed State Road 203 today (NOV 27) at its bridge over Woods Fork Creek northwest of Lexington in Scott County.

The existing structure—located 1.52 miles south of S.R. 3 between Plymouth and Smith Roads in Lexington Township—will be removed and replaced over the next four months.

Motorists are being detoured around the site via S.R. 356, S.R. 3 and S.R. 56.

Duncan Robertson of Franklin is the state’s contractor for this $931,463 project to construct the new 3-span bridge with new approach slabs.

Built on existing piers, the new concrete superstructure will measure 153 feet in length with 28 feet of clear roadway side-to-side.

The project includes new I-beams, end bends and end caps.

Saint Mary’s Gets Past Indiana Women In Hilton Concord Classic Finale

0

MORAGA, Calif.  – Four players scored in double figures backed by 20-plus point performances by senior guard Tyra Buss and freshman guard Jaelynn Penn, but it wasn’t enough as Indiana fell to host Saint Mary’s, 88-82, in the Hilton Concord Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Buss led with a game-high 24 points and added seven assists, four steals and two rebounds. Penn shot 50 percent from 3-point range (4-for-8) to set a new career-high 21 points, nine rebounds and three steals as the duo were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Indiana shot 44.4 percent from the floor on the afternoon including a 52.6 percent clip from beyond the arc (10-for-19). They were much improved from the free throw line, shooting 80 percent (16-for-20). Joining Buss and Penn were freshman guard Bendu Yeaney with 15 points and senior forward Amanda Cahill who added 10 points.

The tournament host Saint Mary’s 58.5 field goal percentage including a 56.3 percent clip from 3-point ranged helped them to the win, who also won the rebounding margin, 35-27.

The Hoosiers found themselves in foul trouble in the early going, with Royster picking up her second foul with just under three minutes into the game. Saint Mary’s would increase its lead to five before a floater by Buss cut it back down to three with 6:57 remaining. Cahill tied up the game at 9-all with a corner 3-pointer but the Gaels pushed its lead back up to five, 16-11. A 3-pointer by Penn and Buss layup help IU keep it within three after the first, trailing 19-16.

Saint Mary’s took its largest lead of the half/game opening the second quarter on a 6-0 run. A three-point play by Royster got IU on the board with 7:49 left before halftime. Warthen’s 3-pointer from the right side got Indiana to within three, 33-30, but that would be the closest it would get. Saint Mary’s would extend its lead to eight at halftime, 47-39, as they would score at the buzzer.

Scoring the first five points of the quarter, Indiana shot 75 percent from 3-point range in the second half as the game would change leads four times in the final 20 minutes. Two at the line for Penn and a triple by Yeaney made it a 60-60 game with 4:09 remaining. Yeaney helped Indiana take its first lead of the game as she cleaned up a missed layup and hit one at the line.

After a Gaels’s bucket, Indiana countered with a Penn 3-pointer but didn’t score for the final two minutes of the third, trailing 68-64. Pushing its lead back up to eight with less three minutes off the clock in the fourth, IU would stage a comeback as Saint Mary’s went without a field goal for five minutes. Royster at the line and a 3-pointer by Yeaney tied it up at 76-76 with 3:36 remaining.

Finally hitting with 2:37 left, the Gaels got back-to-back layups and take a four-point lead with 46 seconds remaining. They would eventually go up by five but a big three from Penn made it a two-point game, 84-82. But forced to foul and in the bonus, Saint Mary’s made four-straight free throws to seal the game.

Purdue Women’s Basketball Rebounds with 79-67 Win at Hawaii

0

The Boilermakers shot just shy of 60 percent from the field

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Purdue women’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday with a 79-67 victory over Rainbow Wahine Challenge host Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Boilermakers cashed in 59.6 percent from the field in the win, including 60 percent from the 3-point arc as they improved to 4-2 on the season.

The Boilermakers did all their work in the first half, racing out to a 24-10 lead after the first and a 43-19 halftime edge. It felt at times as if they couldn’t miss, draining shots in bunches and using stout rebounding and converting turnovers to make big runs. Purdue turned 10 Hawaii first-half turnovers into 16 points, and drained 7-of-11 from distance, while holding the Rainbow Wahine to just eight first-half rebounds and 35 percent shooting.

Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp cleared her bench in the second half, working through a variety of lineups and personnel groups, but led comfortably the whole way. Hawaii did everything they could to erase the deficit, hitting on 7-of-13 from the 3-point line and draining 64 percent in the fourth quarter, but Purdue’s margin proved too large to cover.

Four Boilermaker scored in double figures, led by sophomore Ae’Rianna Harris who hit on 9-of-11 for 18 points. Fellow sophomore Lamina Cooper stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals, hitting 6-of-9 from the floor and not committing a turnover in 27 minutes. Sophomore Dominique Oden hit on four 3’s to score 14 points, and freshman Karissa McLaughlin chipped in 12 points and five assists, hitting a pair of triples.

The Boilermakers wrap up tournament play tomorrow, facing Marist University at 7:30 p.m. ET.
