Fall Back With Time Change Sunday at 2a

0

It’s always nice to have extra hour of sleep on the weekend, and we’re about to get one as we fall back into Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 6.

fall_back_time_change

The time change officially takes place at 2 a.m., but you don’t have to spring out of bed and move the big hand on your clock back an hour. The change is automatic for most smartphones, computers, tablets and other digital devices.

If you’re still using an analog alarm clock, you’ll probably want to move it back before you go to sleep on Saturday or when you wake up the next morning.

The end of DST is also a good time to change the batteries and make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order.

When the time falls back an hour means the sun will begin to set before dinner. Sunset this Sunday will be at 4:46 p.m.

This all started when Ben Franklin suggested 232 years ago that towns should employ the use of church bells or cannon blasts, if necessary, to wake citizens at sunrise so they could take full advantage of sunlight.

Sanitary Sewer Overflow Advisory for Bloomington

0

The City of Bloomington Utilities has issued a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) advisory for the following streets after an SSO was confirmed Monday.

The areas affected are:

    • 1400/1500 blocks East Clairmont Place
    • 1400/1500 blocks East Dunstan Drive

CBU staff say the SSO was triggered by roots infiltrating an eight-inch sewer line. The proper clean-up protocol included removing the roots from the sewer line. Citizens in the aforementioned areas are advised to take precautions when coming into contact with untreated sewage that may have accumulated as a result of this overflow. Any individual who has come into direct contact with untreated sewage is advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

The process of determining the volume of flow generated by this SSO is ongoing.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is committed to a more efficient and reliable wastewater collection and treatment system. Reducing the number of sanitary sewer overflows is a major emphasis in that effort.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is also committed to transparency with respect to the citizens of this community, including issuing public advisories in the event a confirmed sanitary sewer overflow has occurred.

The Scott County Sheriff and Scottsburg Police are Boosting Patrols for Upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday Travel

0

Scottsburg, IN. – The Scott County Sheriff’s Department and Scottsburg City Police announced today it will increase patrols for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday travel period – running November 11 through December 4, 2016. Officers will join more than 250 state and local law enforcement agencies, to conduct high-visibility patrols encouraging drivers and passengers to drive sober, and buckle up for safety.

unnamed

“With Thanksgiving being a major travel time each year, it’s important we stay vigilante in keeping Indiana’s roadways safe for drivers and their passengers, “said Sheriff Dan McClain. “That’s why it’s so important for those behind the wheel and riders alike to buckle up and drive sober. It’s also important to watch out for your fellow travelers, and if you see something unsafe on the roads, don’t hesitate to call 911 and report it.”

Increased enforcement during the Thanksgiving Holiday period is an annual statewide effort supported by federal funding allocated to the Scott County Traffic Safety Partnership from the Traffic Safety division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI). More than 15 City and County Police officers will work overtime to conduct sobriety patrols, checkpoints, and seat belt patrols around the clock.

According to ICJI, in November 2015, there were 533 alcohol-related crashes across Indiana, resulting in 220 injuries and 7 fatalities. Additionally, in the same month, crash reports indicate 285 accidents involved a driver or a passenger unrestrained, resulting in 302 injuries and 16 fatalities.

Further, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for kids between the ages of 8 and 15. For families with young children, it’s important to have a properly installed child safety seat or booster seat for each child. Parents can visitwww.childseat.in.gov for a list of locations and a toll-free phone number to speak with experts about the proper installation of child safety seats

“Through statistics we know firsthand buckling up, staying sober behind the wheel, and not texting and driving not only protects those traveling with you, but also those with whom you are sharing the road,” said ICJI Director Dave Murtaugh. “That’s why it’s vital we work together, from officers patrolling our streets, to drivers making safe and responsible choices, in an effort to make our roadways the safest in the country.”

Fire Department, Midwest Investigate “Gas” Smell Near Schools

0

The Salem Fire Department and Midwest Natural Gas were investigating the smell of natural gas in the area around Salem Community Schools earlier this morning.

According to Salem Fire Chief Tom Day, the school have been cleared.

Day said Midwest officials thought the smell was not gas but “some type of gear oil.”

He said they were still at the schools double checking.

The 911 call came in at 7:30a.

Initially it was reported the smell of gas was in the area of Bradie Shrum Elementary School.

Superintendent Dr. Lynn Reed reported shortly afterwards that the gas smell had been reported at all three buildings on campus.

Before 8a, Elementary Principal Brent Minton noted on Facebook, “Everything is okay. There isn’t a gas leak at the elementary. We just had people report there was a smell of natural gas in the area. The City of Salem Fire Department responded as did Midwest Natural Gas. The smell has dissipated at the elementary area.”

School was not held up this morning, but after 8a, Midwest and the fire department were still monitoring the area.
