44-Year-Old Jeffersonville Man Dies After Police Shooting

Indiana State Police detectives released the identity of the armed male involved in Thursday evening’s police-involved shooting with Jeffersonville police officers.

Forty-four-year-old Robert William Atkins, of 1501 E. 8th Street in Jeffersonville, was rushed to University Hospital in Louisville after investigators say he reportedly shot a handgun in the air and then pointed it toward responding officers.

Robert Atkins was initially listed in critical condition; however, the Jefferson County, Kentucky Coroner’s Office advised he passed away from his injuries on Sunday afternoon.

This case is still under investigation as ISP detectives continue interviewing witnesses and officers involved in the shooting. More information will be released as it becomes available.

The family of Robert Atkins has been notified.

A preliminary investigation by ISP detectives revealed that around 7 pm last Thursday, officers with the Jeffersonville Police Department responded to the apartment complex at 1501 E. 8th Street after receiving a 911 call about an allegedly mentally disturbed man walking around the parking area while armed with a handgun.

ISP detectives believe that after Jeffersonville officers arrived and made contact with the man, he fired a pistol in the air and then pointed the gun toward the officers.

As a result, at least one officer fired their department weapon, striking the subject.

After officers provided life-saving measures, the man was immediately taken to University Hospital in Louisville by ambulance.

He was listed in Critical Condition.

No officers were injured, and officers from both departments checked to ensure no apartment residents were harmed.
