At the Initial Hearing this afternoon at approximately 1:15pm, Washington County Superior Court Judge Dustin Houchin set a $2 million full cash bail for Jeffery A. Mauck, who was arrested on Friday after an attempted kidnapping.

Washington County Sheriff Brent Miller announced the arrest of the 53-year-old Borden man following the attempted kidnapping incident involving a teenage Amish girl in Salem on Friday, October 23.

Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Cody Pouw and Sgt. Matt Hein were called to 2034 North Naugle Road, in the New Philadelphia area, after a male was reported trying to adjuct a juvenile female at gunpoint.

The property located at 2034 North Naugle Road in Salem is owned by Michael and Susie Schmidt.

Upon arrival, Pouw said he observed a Blue Jeep Cherokee with the engine running. He also said that next to the vehicle were several people restraining a man, later identified as Mauck.

Pouw said he saw another man at the location who identified himself as Lindsey Hopklns, who saw the incident and stopped to help. He produced a silver hangun he said belonged to Mauck and, after unloading it placed it on the ground away from the group.

Hopkins told police he was driving by the residence and noticed the commotion and stopped to help because he knew the residents.

Pouw and Hein said they informed Mauck he was going to be detained and handcuffed him. While rolling him over, police noticed a pair of black handcuffs underneath him.

Police also observed an odor of alcohol from Mauck.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Pouw and Hein noticed he had red eyes and asked Mauck if he had been drinking and he admitted to officers he had.

Miranda rights were administered and Mauck asked to speak to an attorney.

A press release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department also noted police obtained ammunition and two folding knives from the scene.

Mauck was asked about consent for a blood alcohol test and submitted to a chemical test, which was conducted at St. Vincent Salem Hospital. The results were .292 grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, which is more than three and a half times the legal driving limit of 0.08% in the United States.

Sgt. Hein interviewed the female victim and noted  “[she] stated that she was walking along the driveway at her residence to retrieve the mail when she noticed the Jeep pull into the driveway and approach her. The male driver of the Jeep then asked her if her family sold eggs. She told him no and began to walk away. She then said the driver appeared standing behind her and told her to get in the vehicle. The victim then started to scream and told him to stop. She further states that the driver then pinned her against the Jeep and told her if she didn’t stop screaming he would shoot her.”

According to police the female victim then said she was able to get the pistol away from Mauck and her family members arrived and restrained [him].

The female told police she did not recognize the driver.
