SPD ARREST SHS STUDENT IN HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT

A 16 year old Salem High School student has been questioned and arrested in the hit and run accident this morning involving a SHS football player.
The 15 year old who was struck this morning at about 7:00 a.m. remains in the intensive care unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
He is classified in serious condition with head and upper body injuries.
According to Salem Police Department Major Scott Ratts, the vehicle, a green 1996 Ford truck, was found about noon in the Salem High School parking lot.
Salem police were tipped off by SHS staff about the vehicle’s location.
The 16 year old was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and criminal recklessness with a motor vehicle.
The juvenile has been transferred to a juvenile detention facility in Jackson County until a court hearing can be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Washington Circuit Court.
The 15-year-old was walking to an early football practice at Salem High School Friday morning when he was struck on Houston Street, about a block west of the school.
Salem Police and Washington County EMS were called to the scene a little after 7:00 a.m. Friday morning. They found the boy lying beside the street as well as pieces of the damaged vehicle.
He was taken by helicopter ambulance to Kosair Children’s hospital.
Police recovered part of the headlight and were able to determine it was from a Ford Ranger pickup – between the years 1992 – 1996.
Police Chief Troy Merry and Ratts stopped at WSLM at 8:00 a.m. to break in on Coffee Club to give details of the accident and ask listeners to report a damaged Ford truck if spotted.

According to Major Scott Ratts, the Salem Police are still looking for a Ford Pickup truck — between 1992 and 1996 – with front end damage to the passenger side headlight and trim damage. There is no known color for the suspect vehicle.

The vehicle struck a 15-year-old Salem High School Football player on the way to school for early practice before 7:00 a.m. Friday morning.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Houston Street, a block from SHS about 7:04 a.m.

Police found the boy lying on the side of the road, badly injured, along with parts from the vehicle.

The Salem Police Department is looking for a 1992 Ford Truck believed to have been involved with a hit and run accident this morning on Houston Street, just a block behind Salem High School.

The accident happened shortly after 7:00 a.m.

The 15-year old student who was struck was flown by helicopter ambulance to a hospital in Louisville.

Parrt of the front right head light of the truck was recovered by police this morning.

Police are on the look out for a 1992 Ford Ranger truck with damage to the front passenger side.
